Florence Pugh’s ‘East of Eden’ Keeps Growing on Netflix in a Run That Rivals ‘Adolescence’
Netflix’s ‘East of Eden’ started out as a quiet success. The 7-episode limited series, adapted from John Steinbeck’s 1952 novel, premiered on October 2 and drew 6.5 million views over its 4-day opening weekend.
That was enough to put it at No. 1 on Netflix’s Global Top 10 English TV list for the weekend. Still, What’s on Netflix noted that the debut placed it 17th among 30 recent Netflix limited series, well behind big openers like ‘Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story’ and ‘The Watcher’.
The series hasn’t stopped growing since then. As Film Updates shared, Deadline reports that ‘East of Eden’ has now reached 4.4 times its debut-week views. The show went from 6.5 million views in its first week to a cumulative 28.9 million by week 4. That’s a dramatic rise for a series that started with a fairly modest opening.
The growth puts ‘East of Eden’ in rare company. According to Deadline’s analysis, it’s the biggest 4-week multiple for a limited series on Netflix since ‘Adolescence’, which grew 4.7 times over the same period.
The comparison looked at 11 limited series that charted in Netflix’s English-language Top 10 for 4 straight weeks since 2025. Along with ‘Adolescence’, that group includes ‘His & Hers’, ‘Lord of the Flies’, ‘I Will Find You’, ‘Vladimir’ and ‘Death by Lightning’.
‘Adolescence’ is the only show in that group with a bigger increase. For a period drama that started slowly, that’s an impressive result. The series is set in California’s Salinas Valley in the early 20th century. Zoe Kazan created and wrote the adaptation and serves as co-showrunner with Jeb Stuart.

Florence Pugh, who also executive produces, plays Cathy Ames. Christopher Abbott plays Adam Trask, Mike Faist plays Charles Trask, and Joseph Zada and Joe Anders play Cal and Aron Trask.
Hoon Lee, Tracy Letts, Ciarán Hinds and Martha Plimpton round out the cast. Garth Davis directed the first 4 episodes, while Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre directed the final 3. The show’s success has extended beyond the streamer. Penguin Classics reported nearly a 200% increase in sales of the novel across formats since Netflix greenlit the series.
Steinbeck’s book also climbed to No. 1 on Amazon’s Best Sellers list. Its audiobook even appeared on Amazon’s “Best of #BookTok” list, showing how the adaptation is bringing the classic to a new generation of readers.

The show’s steady growth suggests strong word of mouth. Rather than relying on a huge opening, ‘East of Eden’ seems to be building its audience as viewers recommend it to friends and family.
That kind of momentum is especially valuable for a limited series, which doesn’t have future seasons to drive interest. It also shows that literary adaptations can find large audiences when given time.

The success also gives Joseph Zada another major showcase. He stars as a young Haymitch Abernathy in ‘The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping’, which opens in theaters on November 20. For Pugh and Kazan, meanwhile, the steady climb is a strong vote of confidence in their take on Steinbeck.
