Boxing legends Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao will face each other again in a rematch of their famous 2015 fight. The fight is scheduled for September 19 at the Sphere, a new event venue in Las Vegas, the fighters announced on Monday. This will be the first boxing match held at the venue, and the fight will be streamed live on Netflix.

Mayweather, who turns 49 on Tuesday, recently announced he would come out of retirement after nine years. Pacquiao, 47, ended his own four-year retirement last year and is set to fight Ruslan Provodnikov in April as part of his comeback. According to the Associated Press, the fighters have not announced a weight class or the number of rounds for the rematch.

The two fighters first met 11 years ago in a match that did not fully meet the massive hype leading up to it. Mayweather won the fight by decision. He stated in a press release, “I already fought and beat Manny once. This time will be the same result.” Pacquiao admitted he fought the first bout with a shoulder injury, which kept him from attacking aggressively, and he said, “The fans have waited long enough — they deserve this rematch. I want Floyd to live with the one loss on his professional record and always remember who gave it to him.”

The first fight had been highly anticipated for years. Fans called for a matchup between the two top fighters, but negotiations took a long time. Mayweather has said he only fights on his own terms, leading some to believe he waited until Pacquiao was slightly past his prime. Now, both fighters are well past their peaks, but they remain among the biggest names in boxing.

After defeating Conor McGregor in 2017, Mayweather retired with a perfect 50-0 record. Since then, he has taken part in exhibition matches, including fights against YouTubers and other non-traditional opponents. He also has legal disputes over unpaid bills and other financial issues. Heigl also announced an exhibition with 59-year-old Mike Tyson this spring, though a date and location have not been finalized.

Pacquiao has focused on politics in recent years, running for president and later losing a Senate race in the Philippines. He returned to boxing shortly afterward, fighting WBC welterweight champion Mario Barrios to a majority draw while trying to become the oldest 147-pound champion.

The upcoming rematch is part of Netflix’s push into live sports. The streamer previously showed Terence Crawford’s fight against Canelo Álvarez and will broadcast Tyson Fury’s comeback fight in April. The Sphere, which opened in 2023, hosted a UFC show in 2024. UFC President Dana White said that show cost around $20 million to produce, about ten times the cost of a normal UFC pay-per-view event, due to the venue’s unique technology and requirements.

This fight is expected to bring huge attention and possibly record-breaking revenue, given the names involved and the hype from their first match.

This rematch could be a mix of nostalgia and business, showing the power of star athletes even past their prime. Fans have waited a long time, and it will be interesting to see if either fighter surprises the world. What do you think, can Pacquiao finally get revenge, or will Mayweather prove he still has the edge? Share your thoughts in the comments.
