Fran Drescher has long been the face of the traditional television sitcom, but the icon behind The Nanny is ready to close that particular chapter of her career. In a candid discussion with fellow television legend Ted Danson on his podcast Where Everybody Knows Your Name, Drescher revealed that she likely won’t return to the small screen in the way fans have come to expect.

Specifically, she noted that the rigors of a multi-camera live sitcom no longer hold the same appeal, admitting that she doesn’t see herself doing another one in the future. The 68-year-old actress explained that the daily routine of a soundstage has become a significant struggle for her.

Reflecting on her most recent experience as a series regular—which was the 2020 NBC comedy Indebted—Drescher noted that the long hours spent in a dark studio during the winter months took a toll on her well-being. She recalled that it was pretty dark when I entered the stage, and it was dark when I left it, leading her to question if that was truly how she wanted to spend her time.

Despite her reservations about traditional sitcoms, Drescher hasn’t completely ruled out a television comeback, provided it is on her own terms. She suggested that a project where she could wear multiple hats—such as writing and executive-producing or directing—would be far more stimulating and gratifying than simply playing a supporting role.

For Drescher, the creative control she enjoyed during the height of her success is a key ingredient that was missing from her more recent television ventures. While her sitcom days may be winding down, Drescher is currently enjoying a major cinematic resurgence in Josh Safdie’s sports drama Marty Supreme.

The film, which premiered in late 2025 to rave reviews, stars Timothée Chalamet as a 1950s ping pong prodigy, with Drescher playing his mother, Rebecca Mauser. The project has been a massive hit for A24, grossing over $150 million globally and earning Drescher significant praise for her dramatic range alongside an ensemble that includes Gwyneth Paltrow and Tyler, the Creator.

Drescher’s schedule remains remarkably busy, though much of her focus has shifted toward the stage and advocacy. She is currently in the final stages of developing a Broadway musical adaptation of The Nanny, co-writing the book with her longtime creative partner Peter Marc Jacobson.

This new phase of her career follows a historic tenure as the president of SAG-AFTRA, a role she stepped down from in September 2025. Her leadership during the 2023 strikes reshaped the industry’s approach to streaming residuals and AI protections, leaving a lasting legacy for her fellow performers.

Now that she has handed the presidency over to Sean Astin, Drescher seems focused on projects that allow her to prioritize her own creative fulfillment and happiness. Whether she is walking a red carpet for an Oscar-nominated film or working behind the scenes on a Broadway-bound musical, Drescher continues to be a force to be reckoned with in the entertainment world.
