Frank Grillo Says He Was Originally Hesitant to Do One Thing in ‘Peacemaker’ Season 2: “I Was Really Against It Because I’m a Serious Actor”

Frank Grillo has become a key figure in the new DC Universe, playing Rick Flag Sr. He’s already appeared in every DCU project released so far. Grillo had a big part in Creature Commandos, which came out in December, a smaller role in the recent Superman movie, and now he’s set for a major role in Peacemaker Season 2.

But there was one thing Grillo wasn’t excited about, dancing in the new Peacemaker opening credits. The show’s second season will feature a funny and serious dance sequence, and at San Diego Comic-Con, director James Gunn and the cast had a good laugh at Grillo’s dancing skills during a chat with Entertainment Weekly.

Gunn joked, “He is a terrible dancer,” which got everyone laughing. “But he was a trooper.” Grillo admitted, “My knees were dying!”

Grillo returns as Rick Flag Sr., the father of the late Rick Flag Jr. (played by Joel Kinnaman), who died in The Suicide Squad (2021).

When Grillo signed on for Peacemaker, he didn’t know he’d have to do the dance for the opening credits. He told Entertainment Weekly that he wasn’t thrilled about it at first. “I was really against it because I’m a serious actor,” he said. “And I was reluctant. And little by little, I became the best dancer out of everyone.”

The rest of the cast quickly disagreed with him, but Grillo fired back with a laugh, “I thought so! But I had such a great time watching Tim Meadows suffer.” Meadows joined this season as Langston Fleury, a foul-mouthed A.R.G.U.S. agent.

He admitted he was even worse at dancing than Grillo. “I was horrible,” he said. “Everybody expected me to be good, and I don’t want to say why they expected me to be good, but I was horrible.”

Gunn shared who really nailed the choreography. He said “Jen [Holland] is very good, and Freddie [Stroma] is very good.” Gunn also reminded fans not to forget Eagly, Peacemaker’s eagle sidekick, who tries his best to join the dance at the end, even if he’s not the best dancer.

Peacemaker Season 2 will premiere on Thursday, August 21, at 9 p.m. ET/PT on HBO Max.
