The film, which came out in theaters on August 8, serves as a sequel to the 2003 classic Freaky Friday. It’s based on Mary Rodgers’s 1972 novel and marks the seventh time the body-swap story has been brought to life on screen.
Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan return as Tess and Anna Coleman, the mother-daughter duo who once swapped bodies in the original movie.
This time, things get even more chaotic when Anna accidentally switches bodies with her daughter Harper, played by Julia Butters, while Tess switches with her soon-to-be stepdaughter Lily Reyes, played by Sophia Hammons. The timing couldn’t be worse, since Tess is getting ready to marry Eric, played by Manny Jacinto.
Along with Curtis and Lohan, several familiar faces from the 2003 film are back, including Mark Harmon, Chad Michael Murray, Rosalind Chao, Ryan Malgarini, Christina Vidal Mitchell, Haley Hudson, Stephen Tobolowsky, and Lucille Soong. The movie also introduces some new cast members, giving it a mix of nostalgia and fresh energy.
Freakier Friday was filmed between June and August 2024 and premiered at the El Capitan Theatre in Los Angeles on July 22. Since its release, it has received mostly positive reviews from critics and earned over $153 million worldwide.
Fans who missed the theatrical run won’t have to wait much longer. The movie will soon join Disney+’s growing lineup of recent hits, making it easy to relive the chaos, comedy, and heart that made the Freaky Friday story so beloved.
