Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End has perfectly combined Japanese fiction’s artistry with Western fiction’s tropes to create a wonderful fantasy work that is extremely popular worldwide, and for a good reason. While the protagonists are the story’s focus, in this article, we will discuss a villain who appeared in Episode 12 of the anime series and that is the Lord of the Mountain. The Lord of the Mountain and his monstrous wolves were terrorizing the Village of the Sword, and in this article, we will reveal all you need to know about this monster and what happened to it in the series.

  • Article Breakdown:
  • The Lord of the Mountain is a monstrous wolf that had been terrorizing the Village of the Sword for some time before Frieren, Fern, and Stark arrived there.
  • The Lord of the Mountain and his fellow wolves lived around the village and constantly gathered around the cave with the Hero’s Sword, as the Sword’s power attracted them there.
  • When Frieren and the others arrived, they had the duty of killing the Lord of the Mountain, which they ultimately did. Stark cut off one of its arms, Fern defended Frieren, and Frieren finally killed it with a spell.

The Lord of the Mountain was a gigantic monster, but it did not seem to have any powers besides brute strength

As Frieren, Fern, and Stark arrived in the Village of the Sword, the current head – a small girl – informed them that monsters had plagued their village and that Frieren had to take them down. Similar to wolves, the monsters were led by the gigantic Lord of the Mountain, whom Frieren had to kill. Although it wasn’t made clear from the start, Frieren knew why there were monsters in the village, and she knew that they would have to eliminate them, so she agreed to get it over with. Accompanied by the village chief, they exited the village and first took care of the smaller monsters that roamed there.

Then they reached a cave and noticed that the smaller monsters gathered around that cave, but they did not enter it. Stark quickly took care of them, but a large monster appeared as soon as he noticed something. This was the Lord of the Mountain.

He was also a demonic wolf, but he was much bigger than the others and walked on two feet, looking like a demon more than a wolf (the smaller ones looked like demonic wolves, while the Lord of the Mountain looked like a wolf-like demon if that makes sense). The chief told Frieren that it was the Lord of the Mountain, and the battle began.

Frieren scolded the monster for “calling itself” a Lord while being so “young” (as it had been there less than a decade), after which Stark cut off one of its arms. The monster attacked Frieren with the other arm. Still, Fern put up a defensive barrier against it, and Frieren simply used a powerful spell and completely eradicated the Lord of the Mountain.

And that is what happened. The threat of the Lord of the Mountain was gone, but the story of why it plagued the village was not yet resolved, as Stark drew Frieren’s attention to something inside the cave – the Hero’s Sword, which shouldn’t have been there.

Namely, Frieren then explained that the Lord of the Mountain and its monsters were attracted to the village and the cave because of the Sword’s power. The Hero’s Sword is a powerful weapon that attracts the monsters who want to destroy it. But, there was a defensive barrier at the cave entrance, so the monsters couldn’t get in. This is why they kept on plaguing the village even though it was inhabited (as monsters rarely plague inhabited places), and why they focused on the cave specifically.
