Warner Bros. is moving forward with plans for a “Game of Thrones” film, with “House of Cards” creator Beau Willimon already delivering an initial script, Page Six Hollywood reports.

The movie is expected to explore the story of Aegon I Targaryen, the conqueror who united six of the seven kingdoms roughly 300 years before the events of the original series. A source familiar with the project said, “All of ‘Game of Thrones’ stems back to him, and you’ve never seen him on any of the shows.”

Despite enthusiasm for the draft from Warner Bros. leadership, the project’s future is uncertain. Paramount Skydance is in the process of acquiring the studio, and insiders are divided on how this will impact the current slate.

Some executives are cautious, saying projects may stall during the regulatory review. “Mike and Pam might try and accelerate the projects that they love, but there probably isn’t much. So much depends on the amount of autonomy Warners maintains,” one manager told P6H.

Others are more optimistic, noting that Warner Bros. will still need to invest in production. “They have to spend. They’re going to have to keep the lights on so I don’t see them slowing down,” a top streaming executive added.

The studio has recently added Mike Ireland as president of production, a move some insiders found surprising given the existing leadership structure.

Still, Warner Bros. is continuing to advance several major productions, including “The Batman II,” the next “Minecraft” movie, and James Gunn’s “Superman” sequel. Filming for these projects is scheduled to start between April and May 2026, with Robert Pattinson’s follow-up Batman film also ready to go.

On the television side, HBO continues to leverage its key franchises. Shows like “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” and the ongoing “Harry Potter” series are considered crown jewels. Sources indicate that “Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” cost between $8 million and $10 million per episode, significantly lower than some other high-profile productions, proving that HBO can deliver quality content without massive budgets.

Meanwhile, Warner Bros. is heavily investing in the “Harry Potter” production in the UK, constructing large sets that will serve multiple seasons and amortize costs over time.

While Warner Bros. navigates ownership changes and a full production slate, the “Game of Thrones” prequel movie remains a top priority. The story of Aegon I could give fans a fresh look at the Targaryen legacy while expanding the rich lore of the Seven Kingdoms. Whether it makes it to screens soon will depend largely on how Warner Bros. handles the upcoming transition under Paramount Skydance.
