HBO is bringing fans back to Westeros with a new prequel series, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, set to premiere in January.

The show is based on George R. R. Martin’s Tales of Dunk and Egg novellas and takes place 90 years before A Song of Ice and Fire. It follows the adventures of Ser Duncan the Tall, a hedge knight, and a young Aegon V Targaryen, known as Egg.

Peter Claffey will play Ser Duncan, while Dexter Sol Ansell stars as Egg. The cast also includes Finn Bennett as Prince Aerion Targaryen, Bertie Carvel as Prince Baelor Targaryen, Tanzyn Crawford as Tanselle, Daniel Ings as Ser Lyonel Baratheon, and Sam Spruell as Prince Maekar Targaryen.

The series has been in development since January 2021, when HBO first announced plans for a Game of Thrones prequel.

Steven Conrad was reported to be writing for the series in November 2021, and by April 2023, HBO officially ordered the show. Ira Parker, who worked on the first season of House of the Dragon, wrote the pilot script. Casting began in October 2023, with filming scheduled to start in 2024.

By February 2024, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav confirmed that pre-production had started, and Martin was involved as creator and executive producer.

Owen Harris has been hired to direct the first three episodes and serve as an executive producer, while Sarah Adina Smith will direct three of the six episodes of the first season.

HBO programming chief Casey Bloys said that A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is set for a January release, and House of the Dragon will likely premiere just outside the current Emmy eligibility cycle.
