‘Game of Thrones’ Star Joins Netflix’s ‘3 Body Problem’ Season 2
Netflix’s sci-fi series 3 Body Problem is bringing in another well-known face from Game of Thrones. Alfie Allen, famous for his role in the hit fantasy show, has been cast in a recurring role for the show’s second season.
Alongside Allen, actors David Yip, known for The Chinese Detective, and Jordan Sunshine from Wonder Pets have also joined the cast. These new additions follow the earlier announcements of Claudia Doumit and Ellie De Lange joining the show.
Filming for the second season recently kicked off in Budapest, Hungary. The production also confirmed that several cast members from the first season will return to continue the story as it jumps forward in time.
Among those returning are Jess Hong as Jin, Benedict Wong as Da Shi, Eiza González as Auggie, Jovan Adepo as Saul, Saamer Usmani as Raj, Liam Cunningham as Wade, Marlo Kelly as Tatiana, Sea Shimooka as Sophon, and Josh Brener as Kent.
3 Body Problem is a science fiction series created by David Benioff, D.B. Weiss, and Alexander Woo. It’s based on the Chinese novel series Remembrance of Earth’s Past by Liu Cixin, with the first book titled The Three-Body Problem. The story’s name comes from a physics problem about the motion of three celestial bodies influenced by gravity. The show’s first season, which has eight episodes, premiered on Netflix on March 21, 2024.
The series explores a group of scientists who discover an alien civilization, triggering serious threats and big changes for humanity. Unlike previous adaptations that were in Mandarin, this version is mostly in English and shifts some of the story’s setting from China to places like the United Kingdom. This makes the show more accessible to a global audience.
This is the first TV project from Benioff and Weiss since Game of Thrones ended in 2019. The series has been well-received, with many praising its cast, ambitious story, and high production quality.
It even earned six Primetime Emmy nominations, including one for Outstanding Drama Series. In May 2024, Netflix confirmed the show will continue with both a second and third season.
Among the main cast members from season one are Jovan Adepo playing Dr. Saul Durand, a research assistant; John Bradley as Jack Rooney, an entrepreneur; Rosalind Chao and Zine Tseng both portraying Dr. Ye Wenjie at different points in her life, an astrophysicist whose early choices threaten humanity’s survival. Liam Cunningham plays Thomas Wade, the head of MI6 and a global intelligence agency. Eiza González stars as Dr. Augustina “Auggie” Salazar, a nanotechnologist, while Jess Hong plays Dr. Jin Cheng, a theoretical physicist.
Other notable characters include Marlo Kelly as Tatiana Haas, a devoted member of a human group serving the alien San-Ti civilization, and Alex Sharp as Dr. Will Downing, a physics teacher battling cancer. Sea Shimooka voices Sophon, an advanced alien communication platform.
Saamer Usmani plays Prithviraj Varma, a Royal Navy officer and Jin’s boyfriend. Benedict Wong takes on the role of Clarence “Da” Shi, an MI6 agent, and Jonathan Pryce appears as Mike Evans, a longtime friend of Ye Wenjie who supports the alien cause.
The show’s mix of sci-fi, drama, and complex characters has made it a standout, and with the new season underway and Alfie Allen joining, fans have plenty to look forward to.
