Gareth Edwards Reveals the Name of ‘Rebirth’s Chilling New Dinosaur

Jurassic World Rebirth is coming to theaters on July 2, 2025. With a 134-minute confirmed runtime, Rebirth will feature a star-filled cast and a story that is supposedly set to take us back to the roots of the franchise.
Directed by Gareth Edwards, the movie is projected to be a solid hit based on the trailers, as many fans have praised the content shown there and believe that this movie will feel more like the original trilogy and Crichton’s book.
One of the novelties introduced to the trailer was a new, hybrid species of dinosaur, something taken from the pages of the books and something that wasn’t prominently featured in the previous movies. Now, Edwards decided to reveal more.
One of the biggest mysteries surrounding this new dinosaur was its name and its origins. In a recent interview, Edwards talked about that fact specifically and he finally revealed the creature’s name, as well as some details about its origin.
“It’s kind of like if the T-Rex was designed by H.R. Giger, and then that whole thing had sex with a Rancor,” Edwards said to the media.
The creature will have six limbs, more sharp teeth than you can count, and an insatiable appetite, so it’s going to be a real threat. It’s name? Distortus Rex! “It’s a design that I was really happy with. I’d like to buy the toy of it when it comes out,” Edwards added.
“It’s as if another animal has been wrapped around the T-Rex,” ILM’s David Vickery added about the monster. “Gareth wanted us to feel sorry for it as well as terrified, because its deformities have caused it some pain, and there’s an encumbrance to it.”
