Mon Mothma Star Genevieve O’Reilly Says Andor Season 2 Is the Story She “Always Hoped For”

It’s been 20 years since Genevieve O’Reilly was first cast as Mon Mothma in Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith. Her scenes were cut from that film, but her journey with the character didn’t end there. Now, as Andor season 2 gets ready to premiere, O’Reilly says this is the story she’s always wanted to tell.
In an interview with GamesRadar+, O’Reilly shared her feelings about finally getting to explore Mon Mothma in depth. “I think Andor is the story that I always hoped for Mon Mothma. I always hoped that she could have this moment for the character, for her, for who this woman is within that universe. And I feel very privileged that I got the opportunity to play it [and] to play her in this moment.”
O’Reilly has played Mon Mothma in several Star Wars projects. She appeared in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, voiced the character in animated shows like Star Wars Rebels, and brought her to life again in the first season of Andor.
Now in season 2, the story picks up one year after the end of season 1. It will follow four years of Mon Mothma’s life, leading up to the events of Rogue One.
The new season begins with a wedding, as seen in the trailers, and shows Mon Mothma’s rise and struggles in the Rebellion. It’s a key time for her character, full of hard choices and risks.
Fans of Star Wars Rebels will recognize this part of Mon Mothma’s journey. In that show, her bold decision to speak out against the Empire is a major moment.
But in Andor, things will be a bit different. The story shows her from a more personal and emotional side.
“Tony carved out a space and recreated [it] still respecting the lore and the canon and what has lived before,” O’Reilly said, “and yet he carved out a space within our story to allow her to use her voice – and that was everything to me.”
This season will continue the story of Cassian Andor and show how the Rebellion came together before Rogue One.
