George Clooney Just Waded Into the Mark Ruffalo Controversy, and His Take Might Surprise You

Hollywood’s biggest merger fight has spent months pulling in stars from across the industry, but few controversies within that broader story have generated as much heat as the one currently surrounding Mark Ruffalo. Between accusations of antisemitism and fierce public defenses, the situation has turned into one of the more contentious flashpoints in an already tense corporate battle.

George Clooney is now defending Mark Ruffalo’s “ability to speak freely” about the Paramount-Warner Bros. deal, saying he doesn’t see how the merger “financially ends up making sense,” according to Variety. Speaking at a press conference tied to a career honor he was receiving, Clooney addressed the controversy directly when asked about it by Variety’s Elsa Keslassy.

“I support Mark Ruffalo’s ability to speak freely,” Clooney said. “It’s ridiculous. We’re not going to ban speech. I believe in free speech even when I completely disagree with it. That’s important. In fact, it’s part of how democracy works.”

Clooney didn’t stop at defending Ruffalo’s right to voice his concerns, offering his own skeptical take on the merger’s underlying business logic as well. “I don’t see how the merger financially ends up making sense for the people who are trying to do it,” he explained. “We’ll see. I worry when a big company swallows up another company. I always worry whenever big companies are consolidating because it means a lot of people are going to lose their jobs.”

That skepticism echoes concerns raised by other Hollywood figures throughout the ongoing merger saga. Actress Tessa Thompson has previously described the deal as “worrisome” from a filmmaker’s perspective, while Senator Adam Schiff has called for the merger to face “the highest levels of scrutiny” given its potential impact on American jobs and free speech in the industry.

Ruffalo himself has remained one of the most vocal critics throughout the process, previously challenging director James Cameron on Threads over his opposition to a separate Netflix-Warner Bros. Discovery deal, questioning whether Cameron held the same concerns about a Paramount acquisition. Ruffalo has consistently framed his objections around fears that further studio consolidation would hurt competition, drive down wages, and reduce product quality for consumers.

Clooney’s willingness to publicly back Ruffalo adds a notable voice to that side of the debate, particularly given his own standing within the industry.
