George Clooney Picks Adam Sandler’s Top Two Movies
George Clooney recently shared his picks for the two best films in Adam Sandler’s career, highlighting performances that show a different side of the actor.
Speaking with a colleague, Clooney praised Sandler’s work in Punch-Drunk Love and The Meyerowitz Stories.
“I thought Punch-Drunk Love was amazing,” Clooney said. “That was the first time we’d seen you do something where it wasn’t just a straight-up comedy.” Released in 2002 and directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, Punch-Drunk Love marked a major departure from Sandler’s usual comedic roles.
Critics lauded the film for its emotional depth and unique storytelling, and Sandler’s performance earned him widespread acclaim, including a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor. The movie has since become a cult favorite, often cited as one of Sandler’s most daring performances.
Clooney also singled out The Meyerowitz Stories, Noah Baumbach’s 2017 dramedy. “I also have to say that you were so beautiful in The Meyerowitz Stories. And not just because it’s Noah. I really loved that. I thought you and Ben [Stiller] were great together. I felt like that movie got short shrift. Somehow it didn’t get the attention,” he explained.
The film, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival and was later released on Netflix, received strong reviews from critics. Many praised the ensemble cast, including Sandler and Stiller, for bringing nuance and realism to the story of a fractured family. Despite its critical acclaim, the movie did not reach as wide an audience as some expected, leading many to agree with Clooney that it was overlooked.
Both of these films show a different side of Adam Sandler, demonstrating his ability to take on serious, emotionally complex roles while still maintaining his signature charm. Clooney’s remarks highlight how these performances have resonated with fellow actors and critics alike, even if audiences sometimes miss them.
It’s clear that Sandler’s range goes far beyond comedy. Do you agree with George Clooney’s picks? Which Adam Sandler movie is your favorite? Share your thoughts in the comments.
