Directed by Ric Roman Waugh, the film follows the Garrity family five years after a comet struck Earth. Forced to leave the safety of the Greenland bunker, the family must travel across a ruined Europe in search of a new home.
Morena Baccarin told Collider in August that filming the sequel was extremely challenging. “It was the hardest shoot of my life. Not the easiest, not the most fun. A really difficult experience. We were outside a lot. We shot in London and we shot in Iceland. It was physically draining, emotionally draining,” she said.
Baccarin added that the story of the family trying to survive “really works, and I think that’s why it got a sequel.” She also admitted, “I am very curious to see it myself, because I feel like it was a blur of exhaustion and running and crying, and much like the first, really.”
Greenland 2: Migration is written by Chris Sparling and Mitchell LaFortune. Alongside Butler and Baccarin, the cast includes Roman Griffin Davis as Nathan Garrity, replacing Roger Dale Floyd, Amber Rose Revah, Gordon Alexander, Peter Polycarpou, William Abadie, and Tommie Earl Jenkins.
The sequel was announced in June 2021, with STX acquiring worldwide distribution rights for $75 million at Cannes that year. Despite some financial challenges, most of the original cast returned. Filming began on April 29, 2024, in Shinfield Studios and Alton, United Kingdom, and on location in Iceland, wrapping in July 2024. Lionsgate later acquired U.S. distribution rights in May 2024.
Originally set to release on March 28, Greenland 2: Migration was postponed and is now scheduled for a U.S. release on January 9, 2026.
The trailer shows a thrilling continuation of the first film, and Baccarin’s comments highlight how intense the production was. Fans of the first movie will likely be eager to see how the Garrity family survives in this new, dangerous world. Are you excited for Greenland 2: Migration? Share your thoughts in the comments.
