We live in a world where a lot of popular video games are getting adapted for the big screen. Assassin’s Creed, Tomb Raider, Sonic the Hedgehog, Monster Hunter, Mortal Kombat, and Resident Evil are only some of the popular video game franchises that we watched on the big screen.
Although some of them received decent reviews, some of them were so bad that they shed a negative light on the movies based on video games. Still, these movies are being made, and regardless of mixed to negative reviews, some of them were box-office successes, like Tomb Raider and Sonic the Hedgehog for which the sequels are on the way.
One of the upcoming video game adaptations that are highly expected is Uncharted, starring Tom Holland as Nathan Drake. But, there is one more Sony Interactive Entertainment video game that will be adapted for the big screen – Ghost of Tsushima.
Developed by Sucker Punch Productions, and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment, Ghost of Tsushima was released in July 2020 for PlayStation 4 and in August 2021 for PlayStation 5. The open-world game sold over 6.5 million copies and received praise for its design, narrative, visuals, and combat. In March 2021, Sony officially announced that the game will get a movie adaptation, with Chad Stahelski, director of the John Wick franchise, attached to direct.
Ever since the announcement, not much more was revealed about the project, but Stahelski now revealed that the script is still in development, saying that he wants to do this movie right.
“We just want to do it right. You know how video game adaptions can go. So we’re taking our time and doing it right. We’re working very closely with the game developers to make sure we stick to what’s great about it.” — Chad Stahelski for IGN
Stahelski is well aware of the challenges that directing a video game adaptation brings. We are looking forward to seeing how will this adaptation look and… we hope for the best. What is your favorite video game movie adaptation?
