Glen Powell Eyed for New ‘Texas Chainsaw Massacre’ Film, Producer Gives Positive Update on Project
Rumors about a new Texas Chainsaw Massacre movie have been floating around since March, and one name that keeps popping up is Glen Powell. The actor, who’s had a big rise lately, was reportedly teaming up with director JT Mollner, known for Strange Darling, on a new take of the classic horror film.
Over time, those early whispers turned into a long list of possible creatives said to be circling the project, including Powell and Mollner, with A24 possibly involved.
When asked directly about the rumors, Mollner shared how it felt to be considered for something as iconic as The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
“It feels very good regardless of whether any of those rumors are true. It’s really nice because wow, people would like to see my version of that,” Mollner said. He also talked a bit about his approach to remakes.
“My company used to be called No Remake Pictures. It’s now called Electric Lady just in case, to keep my mind open. But I don’t like the idea of remaking movies that I think are perfect. And I will say that I do think Texas Chainsaw Massacre is a perfect horror film,” he explained.
Mollner then mentioned his meeting with Glen Powell, which started the buzz in the first place.
“Glen is a tremendous actor and one of the first real movie stars to come along in a long time. I was lucky enough somebody exposed him to Strange Darling and we got to take a meeting and he was really excited about it,” he said.
“And I was excited about his work. And so I do know him and I met him and it was a really cool meeting and I’d love to do something with him at some point. But those rumors about TCM were strange. I didn’t know quite where they came from.”
At that point, Roy Lee, who has worked with Mollner before and is also producing his upcoming film The Long Walk, jumped in to clarify things a bit more.
“Well, there is some validity to it and we’re still in discussions, but nothing that’s concrete just yet,” Lee said.
Meanwhile, there’s already a tenth film in development titled Texas Chainsaw Legacy. A bidding war over the franchise rights is happening behind the scenes, and multiple big names are interested. Studios and creatives involved in talks reportedly include Taylor Sheridan at Paramount, Oz Perkins and Bryan Bertino at Neon, JT Mollner and Glen Powell at A24, Roy Lee at Netflix, and Jordan Peele’s Monkeypaw Productions.
So while nothing is officially greenlit, it’s clear that Texas Chainsaw Massacre is getting serious attention again. Whether it’s Powell, Mollner, or someone else who ends up behind the wheel, Leatherface looks like he’ll be back, one way or another.
