Glen Powell Thinks Chad Powers’ Story Is Far from Over, and Season 2 Proved It

Glen Powell may not be finished with Russ Holliday just yet. After two seasons of Hulu’s Chad Powers, the football comedy has turned into a much bigger story about a man who keeps trying to fix his life while making one bad decision after another. Russ started the series by creating the fake identity of Chad Powers so he could get another chance at football after his career fell apart. What looked like a simple disguise story has now become a complicated mess, and the Season 2 finale left the door wide open for even more trouble.

The second season pushed Russ into situations that made it harder and harder for him to keep his secret. By the end of the season, several people around him had discovered the truth about Chad Powers. Even so, Russ continued chasing the one thing he wanted most: another shot at proving himself on the football field. That goal became even more important as the season moved toward its final game, and it appears to be a major reason why Powell believes there is still more story to tell.

The idea comes from co-creator Michael Waldron, who spoke with Deadline about Powell’s thoughts on Russ. According to Waldron, Powell has always seen Russ as someone who is completely focused on winning and reaching the biggest possible goal. “The thing that Glen always said that struck me was that, in his mind, Russ is just thinking about crossing the goal line, winning the National Championship, and then it’s almost like credits roll for him,” Waldron explained to Deadline.

That way of thinking says a lot about Russ. He is not really someone who spends much time thinking about what happens after he gets what he wants. He sees the championship as the finish line, and everything else is just another problem he has to get through. The problem is that his life has become much more complicated than simply winning a football game.

Season 2 made that clear. Russ’s secret caused problems for the people closest to him, including his teammate Danny and Ricky, who was once his romantic interest and later became someone who helped him with the team. Both of them ended up making difficult choices to protect Russ and keep his fake identity from being exposed. The more they tried to help him, the bigger the situation became.

The Season 2 finale, titled “12th Quarter,” brought all of those problems together. Russ was blackmailed by Gerry, a backup quarterback who wanted him to deliberately lose an important game. Russ was trapped in a terrible position because giving in could destroy the team’s season, while refusing to cooperate could expose his secret.

Danny and Ricky eventually stepped in and found another way to protect Russ. They brought wealthy team booster Tricia Yeager into the situation, giving the group a chance to keep the plan alive and save the team’s season. Russ then made the biggest play of the game himself, running into the end zone and helping the South Georgia Catfish secure the win.

It was the kind of ending that could have easily been used as the final chapter of Russ’s football story. He got the big moment he had been chasing, helped his team win and appeared to prove that he still belonged on the field. But the show quickly made it clear that his problems were nowhere near finished.

After the game, Russ and Ricky finally shared a kiss. Things became even more complicated when Ricky started removing Russ’s fake prosthetics. Before the situation could go any further, her father, Coach Hudson, suddenly walked in and saw the two of them together. The season ended without giving viewers a clear answer about how much Hudson understands.

That final moment gives the show another major problem to explore if it returns. Ricky may also have a chance to take a coaching job in Syracuse, while questions remain about Coach Hudson and his future with the team. Russ has finally reached an important point in his football career, but almost every part of his personal life is still hanging by a thread.

That is why Waldron’s comments are so interesting. If Powell really sees Russ as someone who cannot simply stop after reaching one goal, then there is plenty of room for the character to continue. Winning a championship would not necessarily be enough for him. Russ could find another reason to keep chasing success, especially now that his relationships and secret identity are creating even more problems.

Hulu has not officially confirmed a third season, so there is still no guarantee that viewers will see Russ Holliday again. But the Season 2 finale certainly did not close his story. Instead, it left several major questions unanswered while giving Russ another reason to keep moving forward.

For now, the future of Chad Powers remains uncertain. But if Glen Powell’s view of Russ is any indication, winning one big game was never going to be enough. Russ Holliday may have crossed the goal line, but his story clearly has plenty of room left before the credits roll.
