David Jaffe, the creator of the “God of War” video game series, didn’t hold back when reacting to the first official image from Amazon Prime’s upcoming “God of War” TV show. On his YouTube channel Saturday, Jaffe called the photo “so bad in so many ways.”

The image shows Kratos and his son in the woods. Jaffe said he understands that the show’s team is working hard, but he still thinks the photo misses the mark. “I’m sure everybody’s trying real hard, [but] it’s so dumb,” he said.

He added that it’s possible for something to be both a bad image and still come from talented people. “Two things can be true. This can be a terrible image, and it is. It’s so bad in so many ways, which we’ll talk about in a moment. And Ron Moore is awesome, who is the showrunner… This guy is a juggernaut of a talented fellow. I have absolutely no doubt it is going to be a good show.”

Jaffe clarified that he doesn’t have an issue with actor Ryan Hurst not looking exactly like Kratos. What bothers him is the character’s expression and pose in the image. He called it a “dumb image” and said Kratos “just looks stupid.” He explained, “If you’re going to reveal, to most people, a brand new character that you hope is going to carry your series, for the first time, and they’ve never really seen this before, and this is the way you introduce them?”

He also suggested that the pose may have been chosen to emphasize the father-son story, but he still thinks the image could have been better. “Maybe that’s conscious. Maybe they’re like, ‘Well, what we really want to focus on is the father-son story. And if we focus on him being like, Spartan rage, and all that, maybe people are like, ‘I don’t want to watch that show.’’ Ok maybe. But then, at that point, Ok maybe. But then, at that point, could you find a picture that doesn’t look like he’s sh**** in the woods? Cause that’s what the picture looks like.”

Amazon Prime released the first look photo on February 27. In addition to Hurst as Kratos and Callum Vinson as his son, the cast includes Max Parker as Heimdall, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Alastair Duncan as Mimir, Danny Woodburn and Jeff Gulka as the brothers Brok and Sindri, and Ed Skrein as Baldur.

Jaffe’s full reaction is available on his YouTube channel, where he goes into more detail about the image and his thoughts on introducing such an iconic character for the first time.

Jaffe’s reaction is both funny and understandable. Fans have high expectations for a beloved game like “God of War,” and first impressions matter. What do you think about the first TV image? Do you agree with Jaffe, or do you like the look? Share your thoughts in the comments.
