A sequel to Godzilla Minus One might arrive sooner than fans expected. According to Bloomberg News and Toho, the next movie could release as early as 2026.

It was also mentioned that Toho is working on several projects at the same time, including a possible sequel to Shin Godzilla and a new film set in Southeast Asia. Meanwhile, Toho is also teaming up with Legendary for a second season of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, which should come out next year on Apple TV+.

Back in early 2024, director Takashi Yamazaki said there hadn’t been any real talks about a sequel yet, though he admitted he was interested in making one. When speaking to Mono Magazine, he said he wanted to follow the same characters again and this time have Godzilla fight another monster.

He also shared an idea about exploring the curse Godzilla left behind on Japan, something inspired by the Tatari-gami from Princess Mononoke. Actress Hamabe, who starred in the first film, joked in the same interview, “If there is a next series, I might be the one stepping on and crushing people.”

Actress Ando also had ideas for a possible sequel, telling the Daily Express that she hoped her character would meet Godzilla face-to-face. She laughed about wanting to be like Spider-Man, saying she would enjoy “jumping like this Spider-Man-type woman taking down Godzilla.”

In January 2024, after a special screening of the black-and-white version of Minus One in Tokyo, the idea of a sequel was openly discussed. Some of the main cast joined the event, while Yamazaki appeared remotely from the U.S.

He mentioned that he wanted the story to take the characters back to the sea. Actor Yamada also shared his own theory during the event, saying Noriko could be the key to finding Godzilla again, since she might carry the monster’s “cells.”

In February 2024, Yamazaki told Collider he was working on a new movie but denied that it was a direct sequel to Godzilla Minus One. However, later that year, on November 1, 2024, Toho confirmed that a new Godzilla movie had been approved, with Yamazaki returning as director, writer, and visual effects lead. They didn’t say if this movie would be a sequel or a separate story.

At the Visual Effects Society Awards in February 2025, Yamazaki shared that he had started storyboarding and writing the script for the next film. He also said that the new movie would likely have a bigger budget than Godzilla Minus One.

While no official release date has been set yet, Bloomberg reported in April 2025 that the sequel is officially in development. Koji Ueda’s comments in July now suggest that Toho could release the film as early as next year.

As Ueda said, Toho isn’t just rushing to release a new movie. They want, as he explained, “great ideas, an excellent script, a talented director, and the right cast to work on it carefully” because “Godzilla deserves to have that level of intentionality.”

Possible release date was first reported by Bloomberg.
