‘Goonies’ Reboot? Josh Brolin Finally Weighs In
Back in January 2025, Deadline reported that Warner Bros. was working on a sequel to The Goonies. The studio was waiting on a treatment from Chris Columbus, who also wrote a script for a third Gremlins movie.
However, Warner Bros. hadn’t officially confirmed that a Goonies sequel was definitely happening at that time. The following month, some of the original cast got together with Columbus to celebrate Ke Huy Quan receiving a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
When asked about a possible sequel, Quan said, “It’s one of the most asked questions in my life. I would love for it to happen.” Corey Feldman, another original cast member, was also hopeful, saying, “All I can say is, get us all together. Everybody is looking good. Sean’s looking good. Josh is looking good. We’re all looking good still, and we’re all alive. Goonies never say die…There’s hope.”
Then on February 14, 2025, it was officially announced that The Goonies 2 was in development. Potsy Ponciroli is set to write the script, with Steven Spielberg, Kristie Macosko Krieger, and Holly Bario producing through Amblin Entertainment, alongside Chris Columbus. Lauren Shuler Donner will serve as executive producer. The news excited many fans who have been waiting for a proper follow-up to the beloved 1985 classic.
Josh Brolin, who played Brand Walsh, the older brother in the original Goonies, was recently asked whether he would reprise his role in the reboot he wasn’t quick to say yes.
He admitted he would have some hesitation about returning. “I would [have trepidations],” Brolin said. His hesitation comes from how much he loves the original movie. He feels the story and the magic of the 1985 film might be best left alone after all these years. He also expressed concern about the idea of a reboot with a new cast of kids, worrying that it might spoil the original’s legacy.
“Because I love The Goonies, [but] it’s been 41 years. Let it lay. I mean, no, I love the idea, but I don’t know. If they made one with different kids, then it becomes a different thing, and I think it taints the original one.”
Brolin also reflected on how much the original cast enjoyed working together and how that might be a big reason fans want a sequel. “I think people get excited, and people who were in the original movie, they get excited about being able to work with that group again because it was such an amazing experience. So do I think it should be done? I don’t know, man. I love it just standing like it does.”
With the sequel officially underway and mixed feelings from the original cast, fans will have to wait and see if The Goonies 2 can live up to the charm of the first movie.
