Greg Daniels Has One Clear Answer About ‘The Office’ Revival, and Fans Aren’t Loving It

For years, fans of The Office have wondered if the Scranton gang could ever get back together. The sitcom ended in 2013, but it never really left pop culture. Thanks to streaming, new viewers continue to discover the show, while longtime fans keep going back to their favorite episodes. That has made talk of a reunion almost impossible to escape.

Now, however, creator Greg Daniels appears to be making his feelings about a full revival much clearer. During his recent Hollywood Walk of Fame star ceremony, Daniels spoke with Variety about the possibility of bringing The Office back. His answer was not exactly what fans hoping for a new season wanted to hear. Instead of looking for a reason to continue the story, Daniels seems more interested in protecting the ending the show already has.

The biggest issue for Daniels is that The Office already gave its characters a proper ending. After spending years watching Michael Scott, Jim Halpert, Pam Beesly, Dwight Schrute and the rest of the Dunder Mifflin employees deal with work, relationships and plenty of strange office drama, viewers finally got to see where their lives were heading. According to Daniels, going back now could create more problems than it solves.

Speaking to Variety, the creator explained that reopening the story would be a big gamble because fans already have an ending they are happy with. His point is simple: if a story is finished in a satisfying way, there may not be much to gain by pulling it apart again. For a show as popular as The Office, that risk could be even bigger because expectations would be extremely high.

Daniels has shared similar thoughts before, making it clear that he does not want to bring back the original series just because people still love it. The popularity of the sitcom is not in question. The challenge is finding a story that would feel natural instead of looking like an attempt to cash in on nostalgia. For Daniels, leaving the characters where fans last saw them may actually be the better choice.

The same Walk of Fame event also gave Steve Carell a chance to look back at his time on the show. Carell, who became one of television’s most recognizable comedy stars through his role as Michael Scott, remembered being warned not to take the part in the first place. Many people believed the American version of The Office would never work because the original British series was already so popular.

Carell credited Daniels with helping prove those doubts wrong. Instead of simply copying the British show, the American version slowly developed its own style and characters. That eventually helped The Office become a major hit in its own right and gave Carell’s Michael Scott a place among the most memorable sitcom characters of the 2000s and 2010s.

Daniels has not completely walked away from the world of The Office, though. He found another way to explore that universe with The Paper, a new mockumentary series set in the same fictional world. The story moves away from the Scranton branch and follows workers at a struggling newspaper in Toledo. While the series has a connection to The Office, Daniels has treated it as a separate show rather than simply making another season with the old cast.

That decision may tell fans a lot about how Daniels views the franchise. Instead of forcing Michael, Jim, Pam and Dwight into new problems, he can create fresh characters and stories while still giving longtime viewers a familiar connection. It allows him to revisit the style and world without undoing the ending that made The Office feel complete.

Naturally, fans remain divided. Some agree with Daniels and believe the show should be left alone while its ending is still remembered fondly. Others would happily take another season, even if it meant seeing the characters years later. For now, though, the creator seems to have made his choice. The Office may still live on through streaming and The Paper, but a true revival of the original series does not appear to be something Daniels is eager to make.
