‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Season 22 Finale Sends Owen and Teddy to Paris in a Tearful Farewell as Meredith Drops a Major Bombshell

After more than two decades on air, ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ has rarely struggled to make its goodbyes feel earned. Season 22 had been building toward a pair of departures that devoted fans knew were coming but could never quite emotionally prepare for, with the confirmed exits of Kevin McKidd and Kim Raver looming over nearly every episode leading into the final hour.

McKidd joined ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ in 2008, going on to direct 48 episodes of the series, including his own farewell. Raver joined in a recurring capacity in 2009, departed after Season 8, returned as a series regular, and remained a central figure in the show’s long second act. Their combined tenure at Grey Sloan Memorial makes their exit one of the most significant cast transitions the series has seen since its earliest seasons.

The finale episode, titled ‘Bridge Over Troubled Water,’ involved a catastrophic bridge collapse near Seattle, sending a flood of critically injured patients into Grey Sloan Memorial and placing two of the hospital’s own doctors directly in harm’s way. Owen survived the wreck, fighting his way out of a car rapidly filling with water before surfacing and immediately turning his attention to trapped victims at the scene.

The reunion that followed gave McKidd and Raver one of the most emotionally grounded exits the show has produced in years. Teddy told Owen she had lived all over the world but that he was the only thing that made her feel like home, choosing their relationship over any professional ambiguity. Owen then delivered the real surprise, announcing that he and the kids would be joining Teddy in Paris for her new position.

The episode was packed with deliberate callbacks to their earliest moments on the show, including Owen’s pen rescue from his very first Season 5 appearance, with McKidd directing his own farewell from a bridge location. “Every time we have a season finale or midseason finale there’s a lot going on, but especially with this one,” showrunner Meg Marinis told TheWrap.

The Meredith development, however, arrived as a genuine surprise. Ellen Pompeo’s character spent most of Season 22 off-screen in Boston, appearing in only seven episodes all season. Her return to Seattle coincided with Nick being injured in the bridge collapse and requiring emergency surgery, which pushed her toward a romantic gesture of her own as she proposed, signaling a potential wedding heading into the next season.

‘Grey’s Anatomy’ has already been renewed for a 23rd season on ABC, and Marinis has left the door open for both McKidd and Raver to return as guests, noting in a statement that “this is never truly a goodbye.” The real question now is whether the series can find a new emotional center without two of its most defining long-running relationships, and whether Meredith and Nick’s engagement gives the show the fresh anchor it needs going forward.

Were you satisfied with how ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ wrote Owen and Teddy out of Grey Sloan Memorial, or did you wish their farewell had played out differently after nearly two decades together on screen?
