‘GTA 6’s New Weapon System Just Got Revealed, and Rockstar Is Ditching the Bottomless Pockets

Grand Theft Auto has always let players carry an absurd, physics-defying arsenal at once, stuffing rocket launchers and assault rifles into pockets that logically shouldn’t hold a spare set of keys. That approach became something of a series signature over the years, even as it stretched believability well past its breaking point.

That’s about to change in a big way. With Rockstar Games building toward one of the most anticipated releases in gaming history, early details have started emerging about just how differently combat and inventory management will function this time around, and the shift looks like a significant departure from everything longtime fans are used to.

First details on the weapon system for ‘GTA 6’ have surfaced, according to DiscussingFilm. Four weapons will be available in your inventory at once, including two long-range weapons, one pistol, and one melee weapon. Other weapons can be stored in your car trunk or hideout; NPCs will immediately notice if you have your weapon drawn, and the game will feature in-depth weapon customization.

That four-slot structure marks a dramatic shift from the unlimited weapon wheel players have relied on since the franchise’s earliest days. Rather than instantly pulling out a massive collection of firearms mid-mission, players will need to plan their loadout in advance, choosing between long-range weapons, a sidearm, and melee options before heading into a job.

The change draws clear inspiration from Rockstar’s own ‘Red Dead Redemption 2,’ which similarly limited how much players could physically carry and pushed them toward strategic preparation rather than reactive weapon-switching. Extra firearms won’t simply disappear from the game, though, with vehicle trunks and personal hideouts serving as storage options for anything that doesn’t make the active four-slot loadout.

The addition of NPCs immediately reacting to a drawn weapon also signals a broader push toward more realistic, consequence-driven gameplay. Rather than allowing players to casually brandish firearms in public without repercussions, the game appears designed to make civilians and law enforcement respond dynamically to visible threats, adding tension to encounters that previously carried little risk.

Deep weapon customization rounds out the confirmed changes, suggesting players will be able to modify their limited arsenal extensively rather than simply swapping between dozens of pre-set weapon variants. That combination of scarcity and personalization points toward a combat system built around meaningful choices rather than overwhelming volume.

For a franchise built partly on chaotic, over-the-top gunplay, this kind of restrained, tactical approach represents a genuine evolution in how Rockstar wants players to engage with combat. Whether longtime fans embrace the added realism or miss the freewheeling arsenal of previous entries remains to be seen once the game actually launches.

What do you think about GTA 6 limiting players to just four weapons?
