Rockstar Games has officially delayed Grand Theft Auto VI, pushing its release to November 19, 2026.

The announcement came today during Take-Two Interactive’s second quarter earnings report. Take-Two said that the extra time is meant to ensure the game meets player expectations for polish and quality.

“Giving the team some additional time to finish the game with the high level of polish players expect and deserve. Rockstar has our full support of course, and we are confident they will deliver an unrivalled blockbuster entertainment experience,” the company said.

GTA VI was originally planned for a fall 2025 release. Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick had expressed confidence in that timeline, but the game was first pushed back to May 2026 before today’s update. Rockstar explained the delays as necessary to “deliver at the level of quality you expect and deserve.”

The game is the eighth main entry in the Grand Theft Auto series, following the massive success of GTA V in 2013.

It takes place in the fictional state of Leonida, inspired by Florida, including areas modeled after Miami, the Everglades, and the Florida Keys. Players will explore Vice City, Grassrivers, and the Leonida Keys, along with other locations like Ambrosia, Mount Kalaga National Park, and Port Gellhorn. The game’s world reflects modern American culture, satirizing social media, influencers, law enforcement technology, and internet memes.

The story follows Jason Duval, a former soldier turned local drugrunner, and Lucia Caminos, the series’ first mandatory female protagonist, who is released from Leonida Penitentiary after defending her family.

The pair becomes entangled in a state-wide conspiracy following a failed bank robbery. Other notable characters include Jason’s friend Cal Hampton, Vice City businessman Boobie Ike, record label owner Dre’Quan Priest, music duo Bae-Luxe and Roxy, bank robber Raul Bautista, and Jason’s landlord Brian Heder.

GTA VI was confirmed in February 2022 after years of speculation, with leaks of unfinished footage surfacing later that year. The game was formally revealed in December 2023 and will be available for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.

This delay may frustrate fans who have waited years for the next installment, but Rockstar is emphasizing quality over speed. GTA VI promises a massive open-world experience with a fresh storyline, new characters, and a modern cultural lens that could redefine the series.
