At the 2025 Gotham Awards, director Guillermo del Toro made his stance on artificial intelligence very clear. Accepting the Vanguard Tribute for his Netflix film Frankenstein, del Toro ended his speech by loudly declaring, “f**k AI.”

He praised the cast, crew, and everyone involved in filmmaking, saying, “The artistry of all of them shines on every single frame of this film that was willfully made by humans, for humans. It belongs to all of them, and I would like to extend our gratitude and say, f**k AI.”

Frankenstein, starring Jacob Elordi as the Creature and Oscar Isaac as Victor Frankenstein, was recognized at the awards for its bold creative vision. The Vanguard Tribute honors films that push boundaries and take fearless artistic risks. Del Toro accepted the award alongside his lead actors, highlighting the teamwork behind the movie.

Oscar Isaac also took a moment during the ceremony to celebrate immigrant contributions to Hollywood. “I’m proud to be standing here tonight a Guatemalan, an Australian and a Mexican,” he said, referencing the diverse backgrounds of the film’s team. “Immigrants, baby, we get the job done.”

The 2025 Gotham Awards celebrated the best films of the year, and del Toro’s Frankenstein was among the night’s major honorees, marking its impact even after a limited theatrical run and streaming release on Netflix.

It’s clear that del Toro is passionate about the human effort behind filmmaking, and Isaac’s speech reminded audiences of the importance of diversity and immigrant voices in the industry.
