Gunn Says Supergirl Can Now Be Imperfect “Like Male Superheroes Have Been for a While”
The first teaser for the new Supergirl movie arrived today, marking the official start of the film’s slow promotion before it hits theaters on June 26.
The footage was first shown at a private event in New York, where the cast and filmmakers spoke about this fresh take on Kara Zor-El.
This version of Supergirl is very different from the classic image fans may know. The movie follows Kara as a young woman who travels from world to world, living a chaotic life. The story begins after a rough birthday that leaves her feeling lost, which leads her into a fight she never planned to join. She chooses to help a girl named Ruthye, and that choice pulls her into a dangerous path.
The script by Ana Nogueira takes ideas from the comic Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow and puts a strong focus on Kara’s emotional struggles.

Director Craig Gillespie talked about the tone of the film and said this Supergirl is not the kind of clean-cut hero people might expect. He said, “This is really an anti-hero story. She’s got a lot of demons, a lot of baggage coming into this, which is very different from where Superman is in his life.”
James Gunn, who now leads DC Studios with Peter Safran, also explained why he supports this direction. He told the crowd, “So many times female superheroes are so perfect. She’s not that at all.” He added, “Like male superheroes have been allowed to be for a while.”
In the teaser, Kara even comments on the difference between her and Superman, saying that he “sees the good in everyone, and I see the truth.”
Supergirl has had a difficult history in Hollywood, with past attempts failing or never moving forward. But Gunn and Safran said they feel far more confident about the future now.
When asked by The Hollywood Reporter if he thinks things are improving at DC, Gunn replied, “Oh, yeah.” Safran also said the studio’s position has changed a lot compared to earlier this year.
