Gunn’s DCU Is Dominating HBO Max Charts with Both #1 Movie and #1 TV Show
James Gunn’s DC Universe is making a huge splash on HBO Max. The superhero film Superman currently holds the top spot as the #1 movie, while the series Peacemaker is the #1 show on the streaming platform.
This double success shows how Gunn’s DC projects are dominating both film and TV charts right now.
Superman became available for digital download on August 15, 2025, and later hit HBO Max on September 19. The film followed the standard theatrical window, with 35 days in theaters before digital release and 70 days before streaming.
Physical releases on Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, and DVD came out on September 23. These editions include deleted scenes, a making-of documentary, commentary by Gunn, and other bonus features. Gunn explained that releasing Superman early on digital platforms was intentional, so fans could watch the movie before the second season of Peacemaker, which ties into the film.
The strategy worked. Superman attracted 13 million viewers globally in its first ten days on HBO Max, setting a new record for a “pay-one” film since Barbie in December 2023. Its release also sparked renewed interest in past Superman films, including the 1978 original, Superman Returns, Man of Steel, and the documentary Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story.
Meanwhile, Peacemaker returned to the top of the Whip Media chart for U.S. streaming originals for the week ending September 28.
The show, starring John Cena, launched its second season on HBO Max on August 21. This week it rose from second to first place, pushing Only Murders in the Building down to number two overall.
