Gwyneth Paltrow Says Divorce From Chris Martin Got Her “Fired” From a Movie
Gwyneth Paltrow opened up about a difficult time in her career following her divorce from Coldplay frontman Chris Martin.
Speaking with Amy Poehler on the “Good Hang” podcast, the Oscar winner revealed that she was “fired off” a movie shortly after the split, suggesting the project’s distributor thought she was “too hot to touch” amid the intense media attention.
“I was supposed to do a movie at one point, and it was like right after the conscious uncoupling thing with Chris, and there was a lot of harsh stuff in the press,” Paltrow recalled. “I think the distributor was like, ‘This might be too hot to touch.’” She added with her trademark humor, “So that was great because I was getting a divorce and then I got fired off. So it was so awesome.”
The term “conscious uncoupling” became famous in 2014 when Paltrow and Martin announced their separation in a blog post. At the time, the phrase sparked conversation and some criticism, with many questioning her choice of words. Paltrow reflected on the public reaction and explained why people took the announcement so personally.
“Say you had had a really nasty divorce, or your parents had had a really nasty divorce,” she said. “And then you hear this idea that like, it doesn’t have to be done this way. I think the implicit learning is like, ‘Oh, f***. Like, they’re saying I did something wrong.’”
She continued, “That makes sense to me, like, ‘Oh no, is the inference that I mess someone up.’ Like, that’s not a nice thing to contemplate. So I do understand why it was so personal for people.”
Paltrow appeared on the podcast to discuss her new film, “Marty Supreme,” from A24. She stars alongside Timothée Chalamet, Odessa A’zion, and Kevin O’Leary in the sports drama. Speaking about the project, Paltrow said, “I don’t know if people will like it or not, but it’s a real swing and everyone’s great at their job. And so I was like, ‘Wow, I think I miss this, you know?’”
“Marty Supreme” marks a return for Paltrow to challenging roles and demonstrates her continued passion for acting, even after years in the spotlight and personal changes in her life.
