Hans Zimmer is a world-famous composer known for creating some of the most impactful soundtracks for movies. He has worked on iconic films like ‘The Lion King,’ ‘Inception,’ ‘Pirates of the Caribbean,’ and ‘Dune,’ blending traditional and modern sounds. Zimmer has won many awards, including Oscars and Grammys, for his powerful and innovative scores.

However, it seems that the world-famous composer will have to sit out the upcoming awards season as his work has been disqualified from the Oscars and other award ceremonies like the BAFTAs.

Hans Zimmer’s score for ‘Dune 2’ was disqualified from the Oscars because too much of it reused music from the first movie. The Academy’s rules only allow a small amount of old music in a sequel’s score, and Zimmer’s work went over the limit.

Hans Zimmer, who won an Oscar for scoring the 2021 film ‘Dune,’ had loved the novel since he was a teenager. He chose to work on ‘Dune’ instead of ‘Tenet,’ making it obvious that this was personal for him. After finishing the first movie, he kept creating music for its sequel.

I never left the world of Dune. In fact, I think Denis [Villeneuve] thought I was quite mad, because I kept writing after we finished the first movie. But because I knew the story, I knew the book, I knew what was coming our way. And in fact, a lot of the main themes in this second movie were written at the end of the first film, before Denis started shooting. It felt important to carry on writing when we were still in the same spirit, the same frame of mind.

The Academy’s rules for Best Original Score say most of the music must be new, with limited reuse of earlier works. While fans praise the ‘Dune 2’ score for its fresh and creative music, it reused too much from the first film, breaking the 20% rule and leading to disqualification.

The decision has sparked debates about whether the Academy’s rules are fair for sequel scores. Fans and experts praised Zimmer’s ‘Dune 2’ score as a masterpiece with new and powerful music. Similar issues happened before, like Alan Silvestri’s ‘Avengers: Endgame’ score, leading some to call for updated rules for franchise films.
