The eight episode limited series stars Sam Worthington as David Burroughs, a man wrongly imprisoned for the murder of his son who learns five years later from his ex sister in law that the boy may still be alive. Britt Lower, Milo Ventimiglia, and Erin Richards round out the main cast, with the show marking the first of Coben’s novels adapted by Netflix into an American setting.
Now Netflix itself is leaning into the show’s biggest selling point. In a new video posted to its official X account, the streamer shared Coben breaking down the central twist of ‘I Will Find You,’ tagging the clip with a spoiler warning before letting the author explain what makes the reveal land. In the clip, Coben begins simply, saying “what makes a good twist, of course,” setting up his own philosophy on the craft that has made him one of the platform’s most dependable hitmakers.
That twist obsession has paid off in a big way commercially. ‘I Will Find You’ became Netflix’s biggest TV launch of the year, pulling in 24 million views in its first four days, and it quickly became the number one show on Netflix globally, even fending off fresh competition from the second season of ‘Avatar the Last Airbender.’
The premise itself grew out of a story Coben wanted to tell about hope emerging from despair. “I wanted him to start in the worst place imaginable,” the author explained of David’s arc, adding that when a father is accused of murdering his own child he initially has nothing left to fight for. Worthington echoed that emotional throughline, describing David’s odyssey as one of healing as much as detection.
Critical reception has been a far messier story than the ratings suggest. The series currently sits in Rotten territory with a 61% critic score and a 63% audience rating, with reviewers pointing to familiar genre archetypes, underdeveloped characters, and a plot that strains credibility. Coben’s previous release ‘Run Away’ saw a similarly divisive response earlier this year, suggesting a pattern where audiences keep showing up even as critics grow weary of the formula.
