‘Harry Potter’ Fans Force a Multimillion Dollar Energy Project to Reroute Around Dobby’s Grave
There is a stretch of Welsh coastline that has become something like sacred ground for a generation of moviegoers. Freshwater West beach in Pembrokeshire is where the death of Dobby the house elf was filmed for the Potter movie franchise, and in the years since, it has quietly turned into a pilgrimage site for anyone who ever cried during that scene.
Fans erected a memorial for Dobby at the filming location, and many more visitors were inspired to travel to Freshwater West Beach to leave socks at the site, a nod to the moment Dobby is freed from servitude. The tribute grew so popular that National Trust Wales eventually asked visitors to stop leaving socks and trinkets for environmental reasons after an extended review of the site.
That devotion recently collided with a very real piece of infrastructure. A multimillion dollar power link between the United Kingdom and Ireland was diverted after distraught Potter fans pointed out that its planned route would cut through the beach memorial dedicated to Dobby. The £430 million Greenlink interconnector was initially planned to pass close to the tribute at Freshwater West, running as a 125 mile undersea and underground link connecting Ireland’s County Wexford to the UK’s National Grid.
After a BBC News interview about the operation reached worried fans, a wave of concerned calls prompted Simon Ludlam, the project manager overseeing the cable, to rethink the route entirely. Ludlam recalled that a colleague broke the news to him bluntly, telling him “apparently we’re going to go straight through Dobby’s grave,” a moment he described on the Energy Revolution podcast, where he admitted he had no idea who Dobby even was.
“He’s a fictitious character in a fictitious book, the whole thing is fictitious, what are you talking about,” Ludlam said he initially responded, before being told the matter was very, very serious. He later confirmed the backlash was real, saying the cable was originally going to go straight through the tribute before the company began receiving hundreds of calls.
Rather than dig in, the team went back to the drawing board. Ludlam said they returned to the planners and discussed exactly how to reroute the cable so it wouldn’t go anywhere near Dobby’s grave, adding that a lot of people were very happy about the change and that the project is now moving ahead. The revised path instead runs close to genuine Bronze Age remains, which planners were careful to avoid disturbing, and the project was ultimately completed in 2025.
It is a strange little collision of fandom and infrastructure, a beloved house elf outmaneuvering a nine figure engineering project simply because enough people refused to let his resting place be paved over. Ludlam himself seemed to walk away with a lesson about listening to fans, admitting that sometimes the people who care the loudest turn out to be right. For a franchise that has produced countless emotional flashpoints, it is fitting that Dobby, of all characters, is the one still making grown adults in hard hats rethink their blueprints.
