Ryan Gosling had a surprise visitor during his “Saturday Night Live” monologue on Saturday, and it wasn’t anyone from the cast. As the actor began promoting his new sci-fi movie Project Hail Mary, Harry Styles appeared in the front row, casually dressed and smiling.

Gosling seemed shocked. “What are you doing here, man?” he asked, adding, “I just wish someone would have told me!” The unexpected appearance added an instant twist to the opening monologue.

During the segment, Gosling described his upcoming film, joking about its sci-fi comparisons. “People are saying it’s like ‘E.T.’ meets ‘Interstellar,’ which is crazy, because those are like, what, two of the best films of all time? Kind of like saying it’s like, what, double that?” he said. But his attention kept drifting to Styles, as the camera repeatedly cut to the singer. “I’m sorry, why are we on Harry Styles?” Gosling asked several times.

The monologue escalated when the “SNL” cast appeared dressed as aliens, performing a medley that included Styles’ Sign of the Times and then Gosling’s own I’m Just Ken from Barbie. Kenan Thompson joked to Gosling, “No, we just came to get a better look at Harry.” Gosling replied warmly, “You guys all came to help me? That’s so beautiful, Kenan.”

This marked Gosling’s fourth time hosting SNL, having previously appeared in 2015, 2017, and 2024. His previous hosting gigs included memorable moments, like his uncontrollable laughter during a Beavis and Butt-Head sketch.

Project Hail Mary, which also stars Sandra Huller, is set to hit theaters on March 20. Styles is scheduled to host SNL and perform as the musical guest next week, making this surprise cameo a clever preview.

Gosling’s monologue turned into a fun mix of sci-fi hype and celebrity surprises. Styles’ unannounced appearance created one of the most memorable openings in recent SNL history. What did you think of Harry Styles crashing Gosling’s monologue? Share your thoughts in the comments.
