Hayden Panettiere’s Neighbor Reveals What He Heard Moments Before Her Tragic Death
The past year had been one of quiet reflection for Hayden Panettiere, who spent much of it reconnecting with fans after stepping away from the spotlight. She had recently opened up in her memoir, which detailed her long history with addiction, postpartum depression, and personal loss, marking one of her most candid public moments in years.
Best known for her breakout roles on ‘Heroes’ and ‘Nashville,’ Panettiere had also spoken openly about the grief that followed her younger brother Jansen’s death, which she once described as losing half of her soul. Fans who had followed her recovery journey saw her recent openness as a sign of healing, which made the news that followed even harder to process.
On Sunday, August 16, police and EMS personnel responded to a report of an unresponsive woman at Judson Mill Lofts on Easley Bridge Road in Greenville, South Carolina. An acquaintance of Panettiere’s placed the 911 call after finding her unresponsive inside the residence where she had reportedly been staying temporarily.
Dispatch audio captured responders discussing a possible overdose while CPR was performed on scene. Advanced cardiac life support measures were initiated, but resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful, and Panettiere was pronounced dead at 2:32 p.m.
A neighbor at the complex described hearing a bunch of ‘commotion’ echoing through the hallway around the time first responders arrived, saying the noise carried before word spread that someone had collapsed. Property management later sent an alert to residents assuring them there was no ongoing threat and describing the incident as isolated and non-criminal in nature.
An autopsy completed the following day found no signs of trauma that would have contributed to her death, with the official cause and manner still pending further testing. Greenville Police said the preliminary investigation had not indicated any signs of foul play or suspicious circumstances.
Panettiere’s father confirmed the loss in a statement to ABC News, calling her an incredible light and a force of nature who brought immeasurable love and joy to all who knew her. He asked for privacy as the family processes what he called an unimaginable loss.
Panettiere began acting as a child and went on to star in ‘Remember the Titans,’ ‘Bring It On All or Nothing,’ and the ‘Scream’ franchise before becoming a household name through her roles as Claire Bennet on ‘Heroes’ and Juliette Barnes on ‘Nashville.’ As tributes continue pouring in from fans who grew up watching her, many are left wondering what her neighbors and loved ones truly heard in those final chaotic moments, and what memories of her they’ll choose to carry forward.
