HBO is working on a live-action TV series based on V for Vendetta, according to a report from Variety. The project is still in early development, but sources say writer Pete Jackson has been brought on to create the series.

The show will be produced by Warner Bros. Television, with James Gunn and Peter Safran from DC Studios serving as executive producers. They’ll be joined by Ben Stephenson from Poison Pen and Leanne Klein from Wall to Wall Media, which operates under Warner Bros. Television Studios UK.

The original V for Vendetta started as a comic by Alan Moore and artist David Lloyd in the early 1980s. It was first published in the British magazine Warrior before DC Comics took over in 1988.

The story takes place in a dark version of future Britain, ruled by a harsh and controlling government. The plot follows a mysterious masked figure named V, who fights against the dictatorship with help from Evey Hammond, a woman he saves from the regime’s secret police.

If the series moves ahead, it will join a growing list of DC live-action shows at HBO. The network has already found success with projects like The Penguin, a spinoff from Matt Reeves’ The Batman, starring Colin Farrell and Cristin Milioti.

This won’t be the first time V for Vendetta has been adapted for the screen. The 2005 film version, directed by James McTeigue and written by the Wachowskis, starred Hugo Weaving as V and Natalie Portman as Evey. The movie was well-received and made over $130 million worldwide. Warner Bros. now plans to re-release it in theaters in November 2026 to mark its 20th anniversary.
