HBO is turning the popular video game Baldur’s Gate into a live-action TV series, and Craig Mazin, the creator behind The Last of Us adaptation, is leading the project. The show will continue the story of Baldur’s Gate 3, rather than retelling the game’s events, giving fans a chance to see what happens next in the world of Faerûn.

Mazin is a longtime fan of the game and Dungeons & Dragons. He told the press he has spent nearly 1,000 hours playing Baldur’s Gate 3 and is excited to bring the characters and story to life. “I am a devoted fan of D&D and the brilliant way that Swen Vincke and his gifted team adapted it,” he said.

He also thanked Hasbro and Wizards of the Coast for trusting him with the project, promising to respect the world and its characters. “I can’t wait to help bring Baldur’s Gate and all of its incredible characters to life with as much respect and love as we can,” he added.

Despite Mazin’s enthusiasm, the original creators of Baldur’s Gate 3 at Larian Studios are not involved in the series. Video game journalist Geoff Keighley shared on social media that Larian confirmed they have “no involvement in the series.”

The new series will focus on a group of adventurers who encounter well-known characters like Astarion and Shadowheart. Mazin is reportedly considering including some of the original game’s voice actors in cameos or recurring roles. While the show is still in the early writing stages, fans should not expect it until at least 2027 or 2028.

The HBO adaptation will also be Mazin’s next major project after completing the final season of The Last of Us. No cast has been officially announced yet, and details about the story are still limited.

Turning Baldur’s Gate into a TV show is an exciting idea, but it’s surprising that the original creators are not involved. I hope the series can capture the spirit of the game while still offering something new. Which characters from Baldur’s Gate 3 do you most want to see in the live-action show?
