HBO has finally revealed the first trailer for its new take on Harry Potter, giving fans their first real look at a completely new cast and a fresh version of Hogwarts. The footage was shown at a press event in London.

The series is a full reboot of the original story and will be told over multiple seasons. The first season focuses on the events of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, although the show is using the original book title Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. The trailer introduces a new trio, with Dominic McLaughlin as Harry, Arabella Stanton as Hermione, and Alastair Stout as Ron as they begin their first year at Hogwarts.

Several well-known actors are also part of the adult cast. John Lithgow plays Dumbledore, Janet McTeer takes on McGonagall, Nick Frost appears as Hagrid, and Paapa Essiedu plays Snape. The show is led by writer Francesca Gardiner, with Mark Mylod directing several episodes.

One of the biggest surprises is the release date. The trailer confirms the show will premiere on Christmas Day in 2026, earlier than the previously expected 2027 launch. Warner Bros. Discovery executive JB Perrette described the project as “the biggest streaming event in the history of HBO Max and arguably in streaming, period. It’s number one, two and three in many ways.”

The casting of Snape has already sparked strong reactions online. Essiedu has spoken openly about the backlash he has received. He said, “I’ve been told, ‘Quit or I’ll murder you.’ It really matters. The reality is that if I look at Instagram, I will see somebody saying, ‘I’m going to come to your house and kill you.’ While I hope I’ll be okay, nobody should have to encounter this for doing their job.”

He added that the story’s themes are still meaningful to him, saying, “The themes that run through Harry Potter are of love triumphing over hate — of acceptance. And that’s why I’m doing it.”

The series is also facing discussion around J.K. Rowling, who remains involved as an executive producer. Some cast members have responded to criticism linked to her public views. Lithgow said he has felt pressure as well but pointed out that the books themselves stand against intolerance. HBO executive Casey Bloys addressed concerns by saying her opinions are personal and separate from the show.

Meanwhile, original film star Daniel Radcliffe has shown support for the new lead actor. He said, “I’m sure Dominic is going to be better than me.” He also reflected on his own early performances, adding, “I was very much learning how to do it for a long time on Potter.”

This new version of Harry Potter is clearly aiming to retell the story for a new generation, while also bringing back familiar moments in a longer format. The early release date and strong reactions show just how big this project already is before it even premieres.

This reboot was always going to face huge pressure. The original films are still loved by millions, so any change will get strong reactions. At the same time, a longer series could finally explore the story in more detail. The casting debates and online reactions also show how intense fandom has become today. It will be interesting to see if the show can win people over once it actually airs. What do you think about the new cast and the earlier release date? Share your thoughts in the comments.
