The streaming landscape just shifted in a major way. Paramount’s $111 billion takeover of Warner Bros. Discovery officially closed on Tuesday, October 6, creating a new media giant called Skydance Corp., led by chairman and CEO David Ellison alongside co-CEO Ynon Kreiz.

The road to this moment was eventful. Twelve state attorneys general sued to block the deal before settling with Paramount on September 21, and a judge approved that settlement on September 30, clearing the way for the merger to close.

With the deal complete, fans of both streamers finally have an answer about what comes next. Skydance has officially confirmed that HBO Max and Paramount+ will be combined into a single streaming service, though not right away.

The confirmation came in the company’s official announcement marking the deal’s close. Skydance said consumers can expect “greater innovation from a company built with technology at its core, including significant improvements to its direct-to-consumer streaming products, which will unify into a single service over time,” according to the official press release.

The company added that it will apply the same operational playbook that helped Paramount exceed its synergy targets after the Skydance-Paramount merger. Those savings are expected to come primarily from technology and integration.

Still, the key words are “over time.” Timing, pricing, and a name for the combined app have not been set, and subscribers won’t see a single app on day one. The combination could create a formidable rival to the industry’s biggest players. Ellison previously told investors that HBO Max and Paramount+ together have about 200 million subscribers.

Morgan Stanley has estimated roughly 28% overlap between the 2 services’ subscribers. The firm has described the merger as a path for the fourth- and fifth-place premium streamers to move toward Disney and Amazon, forecasting more than 240 million subscribers by 2030.

For viewers, the biggest appeal will be the content. Paramount+ is home to hits like ‘Landman’, ‘Tulsa King’, ‘Yellowstone’, ‘Lioness’, ‘Mayor of Kingstown’ and ‘MobLand’, while HBO Max offers ‘The Pitt’, ‘House of the Dragon’, ‘Hacks’ and ‘Industry’.

The film libraries are just as stacked. The combined company controls franchises including ‘Harry Potter’, the DC Universe, ‘Mission: Impossible’, ‘Star Trek’, ‘The Lord of the Rings’ and ‘Game of Thrones’.

The company’s portfolio also includes Pluto TV, CBS, CNN, CBS Sports, TNT Sports, Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network, MTV, Food Network, BET, HGTV and Comedy Central. Casey Bloys, who is set to help lead the combined streaming business, has hinted that a bundle could come before a full merger.

A recent video he shared ended on a slide showing HBO Max and Paramount+ as 2 separate logos. That suggests the transition may happen gradually. For now, both apps will continue operating independently while the company works out the details.

Ellison revealed the Skydance name on October 2 in his first post on X. He explained that the company wanted an identity of its own without overshadowing the Paramount and Warner Bros. brands.

It remains unclear whether the unified streaming service will carry the Skydance name. Fans will likely have to wait for more details as the company begins integrating its businesses.
