Heidi Klum showed up to the Grammys in an outfit that took the “nude dress” trend to a whole new level. The dress was actually inspired by her own body, which made it one of the most talked-about looks of the night. She worked with a German designer named Marina Hoermanseder to create a piece that looked like a custom mold of her skin.

According to Klum’s interview with Reuters, the designer used leather to create the perfect shape of the supermodel’s frame. To make it look as realistic as possible, Hoermanseder sprayed the leather and color-matched it so it would be as close to my skin as possible. The result was a structured, skin-like garment that featured small buckles down the sides and anatomical details.

While the dress looked amazing on the red carpet, Klum admitted that it wasn’t the most comfortable thing to wear. The stiff leather made it nearly impossible for her to bend her knees or sit down in her seat during the show. She joked with reporters that she would be the one clapping and standing the entire time because a standing ovation was her only real option.

The process of making the dress was just as high-tech as the final look. Hoermanseder used a 3D scan of Klum’s body to build a custom mannequin for the leather to be shaped around.

In a video shared on Instagram, fans got to see how the leather was heated, stretched, and then lacquered until it was literally shining. The post described the finished product by simply saying Wow, wow, wow, just wow.

Klum didn’t stay in the restrictive leather all night, though. She later posted a video of herself having a great time in a different black dress while eating a burger. She wasn’t the only one trying out the naked fashion trend that night, either, as stars like Chappell Roan also wore sheer outfits that pushed the boundaries of red carpet style.

Aside from her viral fashion moments, Heidi Klum has been very busy with her return to television this year. After a long break, she officially returned to her roots as the host and executive producer for the 22nd season of Project Runway.

It features Klum alongside her longtime friends Nina Garcia and Christian Siriano. She also continues to lead the long-running competition show Germany’s Next Topmodel, which is currently airing its 21st season.

In the world of movies, Klum has recently lent her voice to the animated film Hoppers, where she plays a shark named Hai-Di in the German version of the movie. On the personal side, she recently celebrated her eighth wedding anniversary with her husband, Tom Kaulitz.

Do you think Heidi Klum’s custom-molded leather look at the Grammys was her most daring red carpet choice yet, or did her famous Halloween costumes still have it beat? Share your thoughts in the comments.
