Hell’s Paradise: Jigokuraku, sometimes referred to as simply Hell’s Paradise, is set in the Edo era of Japan and centers on the pursuit of immortality by the assassin Asaemon Sagiri and ninja Gabimaru. The first episode of the MAPPA-produced anime series premiered globally on April 1, 2023.

This list is going to include a total of the ten greatest Hell’s Paradise: Jigokuraku quotes you need to know from various chapters and episodes. The quotes are taken from various contexts and situations, and we have decided to group them based on their message.

1. “My own life takes top priority and I’m not planning to die. My whole goal’s to survive and make it home. Home to my wife. I’m not about to lay down my life. But I’ll sacrifice whatever it takes otherwise. My ideals, reason, sense, even my humanity.” —Gabimaru (Ch. 67)

This quote is actually a very realistic depiction of Gabimaru as a character and all of his values and ideals. As a protagonist, Gabimaru is very much goal-driven, and going home to his beloved wife is the goal that he wants to achieve. Everything else was absolutely irrelevant, and in order to see his wife smiling again, he was truly willing to sacrifice everything else.

2. “Are any of us truly without sin? You seem to be suffering a great deal. But acts of regret and reflection…are part of atonement. If even a single person who accepts you should appear…then…is that not enough?” —Yui (Ch. 5)

Yui was a very gentle person, as far as Kaku portrayed, but she was also exceptionally kind, incredibly intelligent, and perceptive. She saw through Gabimaru, and it was Yui that actually gave Gabimaru a sense of meaning in life. She had a way with words, like Yuzuriha, and she knew how to access the deepest, most hidden parts of Gabimaru’s soul.

3. “I’ll perform feats to shake the Earth and Heavens! Then, my name will pass down through the generations and become legendary. Until they’re telling bedtime stories about me! The name ‘Tamiya Gantetsusai’ will live forever! Believe it! My image, my words! They’ll paint pictures and pen tales far into the future and beyond! That is true immortality!!” —Tamiya Gantetsusai (Ch. 27)

Well, those who know Tamiya Gantetsusai will know that this is the best, no… not the best, the perfect way that Tamiya Gantetsusai would actually introduce himself. The guy was as flamboyant and boastful as they get, but that was part of his inherent charm and why he is one of the best-supporting characters in the series.

4. “The mission? All that honor-bound duty crap? Don’t need it anymore. You can rest now. Your whole life, you’ve been lying to yourself, yeah? It’s the end of the road, so be honest now…Go ahead and think about whatever you want. Your family? A pet cat, maybe? Or a lover you left behind? Picture yourself pressed against her. And pass on within that beautiful vision.” —Yuzuriha (Ch. 43)

Yuzuriha, as Gabimaru once told her, actually had a way with words. While she was a combination of all sorts of elements, she stood out among the supporting characters not simply because she was pretty and a skilled fighter but also because she was quite sensible, very deep, and highly intelligent, which is also reflected in this quote.

5. “These successes and failures will continue at length. For centuries on end, unceasing. Our works shall bloom, wither, be born again, and once more fall to ruin. I believed it would finally survive this time…but no — the cycle goes on. Endlessly, we return to the outset. Over and over our hopes are dashed. Feeling as one might when traveling between Paradise and Hell itself.” —Rien (Ch. 95)

As the principal antagonist of the series, Rien had more than one moment, but this quote is a good example of how and why Rien was such a good villain. She had a philosophical note to herself, and while she was as dangerous and ruthless as you’d expect, there was an innate philosophy behind all of that, and that is why Rien was so convincing – she herself firmly believed in that.

6. “Through my work, I have witnessed the final moments of all manner of people. When they are on the brink of death, I perceive what lies in their hearts. The blade reflects one’s true nature. Some may bluff and keep a brave face to the bitter end…some turn desperate and cling to life…while others deceive themselves into accepting death.” —Yamada Asaemon Sagiri (Ch. 1/Ep. 1)

Alongside Gabimaru, Yamada Asaemon Sagiri was a genuinely great character and a character that showed how much Kaku invested in crafting his characters. She had an aura of mystery and wisdom around her, but also a lot of experience and skill. This quote is a reflection of the latter and it was her first major replica in the whole series, and it also had a major impact on Gabimaru.

7. “I don’t…have a way with words like you. So it’s hard to explain, but what I can remember are the little things. Like her voice. Light, airy…slow and flowing. I don’t know how to describe it. And how her eyes narrowed when she smiled. And her long, soft fingers. And the way her hair smelled when blowing in the breeze. On nice days, when I’m sitting out in nature I can sense her amongst the sun and grass and flowers. Even now. Yui. That’s her name. Yui…she’s no illusion. I can feel it. That might not be the proof you want, but it’s all I have. The only way to be sure is to make it back home to her.” —Gabimaru (Ch. 52)

Gabimaru’s affections towards Yui were quite obvious, and the young shinobi didn’t really bother hiding it once Sagiri uncovered them, of course. This is how he described Yui and her influence on him and his life to Yuzuriha, and it is quite palpable and visible that Gabimaru truly loved Yui and that she had really turned his life around.

8. “This is a lesson you immortals will soon learn. The fleeting nature of a mortal life. That weight. That terror.” —Shion (Ch. 42)

Shion is a strange character, but he is nevertheless beloved by most fans and is a favorite supporting character for many. He also had a philosophical note to him and was quite different from, for example, Tamiya Gantetsusai, who was much more extroverted than him. This quote perfectly illustrates who Shion was and how he stood out among the other characters.

9. “Humans are beings full of doubt and indecision. That, in fact, is the essence of Tao. Wavering between the extreme is what makes humans just so exquisite. Love and hate. Life and death. We Tensen know nothing of love, nor death. So, to search for a more suitable material, at this point…? Simply unthinkable. And now that the elixir is complete? All the more so. Coming to an understanding with you people, now is quite impossible. Should you agree to leave this Sanctum now…I will not stop you. But a ceasefire…is meaningless. As of now, all each side can do is steal more lives from the other.” —Gui Fa (Ch. 81)

This quote by Gui Fa was chosen because it reflects many of the ideas analyzed and talked about in the series. It is, of course, a reflection of Gui Fa’s personality, undoubtedly, but the things he talked about are also those ideas that Kaku analyzed and talked about throughout the whole series, with Gui Fa’s point of view being just one of the many perspectives shown in the series.

10. “Do those without doubt even exist? And if they do, does that lack translate to strength? I have come face-to-face with doubt time and time again. My own. As well as the doubt harbored within the strong. We struggle and doubt and struggle again. If abandoning such doubt is the way of the samurai then samurai I am not. For I refuse to leave such things behind. To the bitter end I remain nebulous and ill-defined. For that is who I am.” —Yamada Asaemon Sagiri (Ch. 120)

And while the first quote by Yamada Asaemon Sagiri we listed was a pivotal moment in the whole series, this one is probably one of the best representations of her as a character. This is what Yamada Asaemon Sagiri was like and what her ideals were. This is how she perceived the world and how her perception of the world influenced her words and her actions.
