Terraria has many options when it comes to buildings. There are loads of gorgeous designs out there, and among the most popular are towers. Among the most essential parts of towers are staircases, which are not that difficult to make with a bit of planning. But today we’re not going to talk about the regular old staircase. In order to achieve that medieval look when it comes to your interior, you’re going to need a spiral staircase. Spiral staircases are a perfect mix of low-effort cheap investment and beautiful decoration. Today’s guide is going to focus solely on them. We’re going to show you how to make a spiral staircase as well as give you some tips & tricks on how to make it easier. So let’s go.

How to make a spiral staircase in Terraria

1. Gathering materials

Before we proceed with our staircase, there are a few things that you will need.

  1. Wall
  2. Beams
  3. Platforms

Walls are needed to create a perfect backdrop for your spiral staircase. I’m going to choose the planked wall as my background. Of course, you can use any type of all the choice is absolutely on you. If you’re going for that medieval castle/wizard’s tower look you should probably choose either wooden or stone walls.

Beams are needed to support our platforms. When stacked on top of each other beams form one single continuous pillar. Beams can be crafted at a sawmill and do not require much effort at all. For this project, I’ve decided to use wooden beams as it matches my chosen aesthetics the best.

The last thing we will need is platforms.

Platforms are blocks used to create stairs since they allow movement through the space they occupy. Platforms can be made by hand by combining various materials. For this project, I’ve chosen stone platforms.

2. Decide on the maximum length of your stairs

Before we can proceed we need to decide on the maximum length of your stairs. I’ve decided that my maximum length of stairs will be 5 platforms. Take note that the platform lengths need to be uneven in order to get that spiral look.

In order for this process to go as smoothly as possible and to ease the process of building a staircase I recommend you make yourself a schematic, like this where you will “conceptualize” your spiral staircase. A single block on this image represents a single block in Terraria making it easier to plan your spiral staircase.

Uneven stair lengths will achieve spiral look curving around a pillar

3. Place walls

Before we begin with placing platforms we need to build a wall that supports them. You can settle on any type of wall, or any type of design for that matter. I’m using planked walls. Place the wall as high as you want, you can sort out the details later.

Wall is supposed to support a spiral staircase as well as provide a perfect backdrop for it

4. Place beams

Place beams of your choosing vertically until they form a single long pillar. I’ve decided on a double pillar. But one works just as fine as well. Your stairs will curve around the pillar. That’s why it’s absolutely essential that you place them before we begin.

Your staircase will curve around the beams

5. Start placing platforms

In order to achieve a curved effect, you will need to start by placing a single platform on the right side (or left the choice is yours). Continue placing platforms until you reach the length of five platforms, then start shortening your stair length, When you reach a single platform, move to the other side and start from a single platform again.

Uneven platform lengths provide curvature

6. Remove the beams

Once you’re done with the staircase and you’ve reached the top. We’re going to remove the beams in strategic places in order to get a true spiral staircase instead of a “zig-zag” staircase. Replace the blocks where beams used to be with platforms as well like this. Removing beams ensures that your staircase is not “behind” the pillar but instead, curves around it. Replace the removed pillar parts with platforms.

Red areas are parts of pillar that should be removed and replaced with platforms

7. Finished result

If you’ve followed our steps, your end result should look like the photo below.

Spiral staircases are not always convenient or usable, but they make for a great decoration. As I’ve mentioned before, they require materials that are easy enough to acquire and can be built in a reasonable amount of time. Which makes them a perfect addition to your house, castle, or tower.

Spiral Staircases are often used in wizards’ tower designs. This player used stone platforms in order for his spiral staircase to look wider and more gently curved. It looks great and his chosen colors match perfectly.

This player went to great lengths to build a Wizard’s tower with a dark & evil theme. This spiral case is made with meteorite platforms combined with masterfully created lavafalls.

And that would be all. Remember, spiral staircases are fairly easy to make if you plan them properly. You’re going to need walls, beams, and platforms to make them work. Proper planning is key as well as deciding the maximum length of your stairs. The end result should be a gorgeous spiral staircase that compliments any type of interior (or exterior).
