Here’s What We Know About the Upcoming ‘Super Mario Galaxy’ Movie
It’s official: Super Mario Galaxy is set to be the second film in The Super Mario Bros. Movie franchise, and fans couldn’t be more excited.
From release dates to casting news, teaser details, and plot hints, there’s a lot to unpack about this highly anticipated video game adaptation. Here’s everything you need to know to get ready for Mario’s next big adventure.
1. The movie was initially listed under a different title

Back in May 2025, NBCUniversal briefly listed the sequel as Super Mario World, though that listing was later taken down. The real title, however, was leaked shortly after. On X, the account Wario64 spotted that NBCUniversal had apparently registered the domain supermariogalaxy.movie, hinting that the official title of the sequel is Super Mario Galaxy—the same name as the game that introduced the character Rosalina.
2. We won’t have to wait long for the release

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is set to hit theaters on April 3, 2026, coming just shy of three years after the first film, which premiered on April 5, 2023.
3. The first teaser trailer is already available

The first teaser for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie dropped during Nintendo Direct on September 12. It’s short on plot details, starting with Mario napping against a tree, then moving through a sequence that ends with a stained-glass image of Princess Peach, before soaring through the clouds to reveal the film’s title. You can check it out here.
4. Old cast is returning

As of now, the confirmed cast for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie includes only the returning actors from the first film. No new characters, such as Rosalina, have been officially announced. The current lineup is: Chris Pratt as Mario, Charlie Day as Luigi, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, and Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek.
5. The Plot is under wraps

Details about the plot of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie haven’t been officially revealed yet, but we can look to the Super Mario Galaxy game for clues.
In the game, a Star Festival is underway to celebrate a passing comet when Bowser attacks, kidnapping Princess Peach by taking her castle into outer space. Mario follows her into space and meets Rosalina, the guardian of small star-like creatures called Lumas. Rosalina explains that Bowser once attacked her home, the Comet Observatory, and stole its Power Stars, leaving it powerless. Mario’s mission is to collect the Power Stars, restore the Observatory, and save Peach.
However, the movie is expected to go beyond the game’s story. “While the Super Mario Galaxy games are the core inspiration for our story, this next film holds surprises for fans of every Mario era,” said Illumination’s Chris Meledandri.
