Few game creators blur the line between video games and cinema quite like Hideo Kojima. The mind behind ‘Metal Gear’ and ‘Death Stranding’ has spent decades crafting games packed with cinematic flair, famously filling them with movie stars and filmmaker friends.

Lately, the flow has started running in the other direction. Kojima was cast in the Japanese dub of Disney’s ‘Zootopia 2’ as Paul Moldebrandt, the Zootopia Police Department worker voiced by Josh Gad in English, after director Jared Bush reportedly offered him the role directly.

Now the auteur is teasing his next big-screen appearance. In a new video posted to YouTube, Kojima revealed that he will have a cameo in an upcoming big live-action film, a tease that spread quickly online.

So far, the details remain scarce. Kojima hasn’t publicly named the film or revealed what kind of role he will play, leaving fans to guess which major production has recruited him. The lack of specifics is very on brand for the designer. Kojima has long enjoyed teasing projects well before their official reveals, and his fans have grown used to piecing together clues.

Kojima has appeared in plenty of projects before. When his ‘Zootopia 2’ casting was announced, he noted in a press release shared by Famitsu that he had plenty of experience with cameos in live-action films and games, but that the Disney sequel marked his first time dubbing an animated feature.

He was clearly thrilled about that opportunity. Kojima described the original ‘Zootopia’ as his favorite film, adding to his excitement about joining the sequel. His fascination with movies runs deep, which is why fans see his cameos as a natural extension of his career. For a creator who often talks about his love of cinema, stepping in front of the camera feels like the next chapter.

The cameo tease arrives during a hectic stretch for Kojima Productions. To kick off 2026, Kojima announced that the studio was moving into its “Second Phase,” with plans to stay grounded and lay solid foundations after spending much of 2025 traveling the world to promote ‘Death Stranding 2: On the Beach’.

That sequel launched on PlayStation 5 on June 26, 2025, followed by a Windows release on March 19, 2026. Meanwhile, the studio is developing the horror game ‘OD’ for Xbox Game Studios and preparing the espionage action title ‘PHYSINT’ with Sony, including casting, scanning, and performance capture shoots.

Kojima’s own work is also making the jump to film. A live-action ‘Death Stranding’ movie is in development at A24, with Michael Sarnoski, whose credits include ‘Pig’ and ‘A Quiet Place: Day One’, writing and directing.

Kojima has previously praised Sarnoski on his radio show ‘Koji10’, saying the director played ‘Death Stranding’ and the first ‘Metal Gear Solid’. Kojima also promised the adaptation would be an unbelievable and strange film, while animated projects based on the game are also in the works.

With no title confirmed, fans are left to speculate about where Kojima might pop up next. Given his wide circle of Hollywood collaborators, the possibilities feel almost endless. Whatever film it turns out to be, Kojima’s appearance will likely become one of its most talked-about Easter eggs. Until he reveals more, the guessing game is part of the fun.

Which upcoming live-action film do you think Hideo Kojima will cameo in?
