Chad Stahelski’s upcoming remake of Highlander is starting to take shape with new casting announcements and a first look at the plot, according to industry sources.

Henry Cavill is set to star as Connor MacLeod, the immortal warrior navigating life in the modern world, while Russell Crowe will play his mentor, Ramirez. Karen Gillan joins as Heather, and wrestler Drew McIntyre has been cast as MacLeod’s brother, Angus. Dave Bautista is rumored to play the villainous Kurgan.

The project, which has been in development since at least 2021, is reported to have a budget exceeding $100 million. Initially moving forward under Lionsgate and Summit Entertainment, the reboot was later acquired by Amazon MGM Studios and Scott Stuber’s United Artists banner in April. Stahelski remains attached to direct, with a screenplay by Mike Finch.

Industry insider Daniel Richtman has shared a synopsis for the film: “Centuries after his first death on a Scottish battlefield, immortal warrior Connor MacLeod (Henry Cavill) lives quietly in the modern world, haunted by loss and the endless cycle of violence among his kind. When the ruthless immortal Kurgan (Dave Bautista) resurfaces, backed by a secret organization bent on unlocking the secret of eternal life, Connor is forced back into the Game – an ancient battle where ‘there can be only one.'”

“Guided by his mentor Ramírez (Russell Crowe) and a mortal ally, archaeologist Kate Bennett (Marisa Abela), Connor must confront his past and rediscover his purpose. As immortals clash across time and continents, the fight for the mysterious ‘Prize’ becomes a battle for humanity’s soul.”

This synopsis suggests the film will blend modern-day settings with flashbacks to historical battles, keeping the core Highlander premise intact while adding new characters and a secret organization element. Fans can expect epic fights, high stakes, and the classic line about there being only one.

From a fan perspective, this reboot looks promising. With Stahelski’s action background and Cavill’s star power, it could breathe new life into the Highlander franchise while honoring its roots. The mix of historical and modern action might appeal to both longtime fans and newcomers.
