Hilary Duff is being open about something very personal. In a new interview with CBS Mornings, she confirmed that her song “We Don’t Talk” is about her estrangement from her sister, Haylie Duff.

Fans started guessing as soon as her new album “Luck… or Something” came out. Many believed the emotional track was about her strained relationship with Haylie. Hilary confirmed the rumors during her conversation with Anthony Mason.

It’s definitely about my sister, and just absolutely the most lonely part of my existence is not having my sister in my life at the moment, she said. She admitted that putting the song on the album was not an easy choice. Really struggled with thinking about including that on the record. But it’s funny, as a person that exists in the world without my other half, so many people are having that experience and a lot of conversations with people are like, yeah, me too.

In the song, Hilary sings about not knowing when the distance between them started or what caused it. She even questions if jealousy played a role. The lyrics are direct and emotional. Haylie has also worked as a musician, which made some of the lines stand out even more to listeners.

During the interview, Hilary became visibly emotional. She explained that sharing the song felt honest, even if it was painful. I think because it’s my truth and like I said, so many people are having this experience, she said. She also spoke about growing up in the public eye and how that makes private struggles harder.

It’s hard because I am me and people know everything about my life since I was a child, and I didn’t necessarily choose that part, but it’s my reality and so it was honestly healing to say. It’s hard to watch your life unfold on the internet sometimes with talking heads on TikTok speculating this, that and the other. Sometimes they’re wrong and sometimes they’re right and all of that is just a crazy thing to process. I think I just try to less and less let that noise seep in but obviously it’s there.

When asked if she hopes Haylie listens to the song, Hilary gave an honest answer. I don’t think that would help… I don’t know if she’ll hear it. I don’t know how she’ll react to it. But it is a really personal part of my life that doesn’t get to stay personal, so I might as well say how it is for me as an experience. And that’s all I’m trying to do. I’m not trying to say anything bad, it’s literally just my experience. And that’s really all I feel like sharing.

Hilary made it clear that the song is not meant to attack her sister. It is simply her side of the story. By putting her feelings into music, she says she found some healing, even if the situation with Haylie is still unresolved.
