Hit 2025 Netflix Crime Drama Axed After Just One Season
Netflix has decided to cancel its 2025 crime drama series, The Waterfront, after just one season, despite strong viewer numbers and a solid following.
The show, created by Kevin Williamson, premiered on June 19, 2025, and quickly became one of the most-watched English-language series on the platform for three weeks.
The Waterfront told the story of the Buckley family, who have run the small coastal town of Havenport, North Carolina, for generations through their fishing and restaurant businesses.
Trouble arises when family patriarch Harlan Buckley, played by Holt McCallany, suffers two heart attacks and steps back from running the family empire. His wife Belle, portrayed by Maria Bello, and their son Cane, played by Jake Weary, turn to illegal activities to keep the family afloat. Eventually, Harlan returns to restore order and protect the Buckleys.
The series featured a strong ensemble cast, including Melissa Benoist, Michael Gaston, Topher Grace, and others. Critics gave the show mixed reviews, with Rotten Tomatoes reporting a 68% approval rating from 44 critics and Metacritic assigning a score of 54 out of 100. Critics praised its gripping drama and mix of family dynamics and crime, though some noted it leaned on familiar clichés.
The cancellation was unexpected given the show’s popularity. Williamson released a statement expressing gratitude for the support: “A big thank you to everyone who watched The Waterfront. While I’m sad the Buckleys won’t be back for Season 2, I’m celebrating the joy that was Season 1. I had the pleasure of working with a dream cast and crew. My heart is full of gratitude for all the people who brought their talents to the show both in NC and LA. You were all amazing. Thank you to my partners at Universal TV. And thank you to Netflix for taking a chance on a very personal story. You were truly a joy to work with! It was one of the best experiences of my life! Thank you.”

The Waterfront was a strong series that found an audience quickly and delivered compelling drama and family tension. Its cancellation feels premature, especially considering how popular it became during its first month.
Fans of the show might feel disappointed, but the series remains available to binge on Netflix. What do you think about Netflix’s decision to cancel The Waterfront? Share your thoughts in the comments.
