Hollywood Star Asks Charli XCX Why She Has No Children and Audience Reacts With Anger
Charli xcx is being very open about her complicated feelings regarding motherhood. During a recent appearance on the SmartLess podcast, the singer chatted with hosts Jason Bateman, Will Arnett, and Sean Hayes about her life and her future.
The conversation took a bit of a funny turn when Bateman tried to give her some life advice about finding the right person to have kids with, not realizing she is already a married woman.
The pop star, whose real name is Charlotte Aitchison, explained that she actually doesn’t want to have children right now. When the hosts asked her why, she admitted that her feelings could change, but she is currently quite content.
She even agreed with Sean Hayes when he mentioned that I’d rather regret not having kids than have them and regret it later. Charli joked that she does enjoy the fantasy of having a child and thinks that naming it sounds like the most exciting part of being a mom.
However, she pointed out that if picking a name is the only thing she finds appealing, it is probably a clear sign that she isn’t ready for the real thing. When Bateman suggested she might feel differently when she meets the right guy, she simply replied, Well, I’m married.
The singer tied the knot with George Daniel, the drummer for The 1975, this past July. Bateman laughed off his mistake, joking that maybe she would want kids with her next husband instead. Charli took the mix-up in stride, saying she knew exactly where the conversation was going and was ready for the response.
This isn’t the first time she has shared her thoughts on the pressure women feel to become parents. She has previously talked about how it feels to see friends become mothers and how it changes their perspective on life.
She has admitted to wondering if she is less of a woman if she doesn’t have a kid, but she also wants to fight against the idea that she has to conform to what society expects. As we move through the year, Charli xcx is currently transitioning from pop superstar to full-blown movie star.
Her new mockumentary film, The Moment, just hit theaters in wide release on February 6. The A24 project, which she also produced, follows a fictionalized version of herself navigating the pressures of fame. The movie features a massive cast, including Alexander Skarsgård, Kylie Jenner, and Rachel Sennott.
She is also staying busy in the music world, having just released a full soundtrack album for Emerald Fennell’s new adaptation of Wuthering Heights on February 13. Beyond that, fans can expect to see her in several upcoming acting roles.
Charli has even co-written and starred in a new anti-romantic comedy called Erupcja, which follows a woman stranded in Poland after a volcanic eruption. With so many film projects on her plate, it’s clear she is focusing all of her creative energy on her career for now.
