Horror Fans Pick the Scariest Movie of the Last 10 Years
Many people love a good horror movie, but what makes one scarier than another? Some get chills just thinking about creepy scenes, while others enjoy the rush of adrenaline.
The debate over the scariest horror film never ends, but podcast hosts Hannah and Benedict Townsend, who run Talk of the Townsends, decided to settle the question.
They asked their followers on TikTok which movie was the scariest of the last decade. Their video showing the results got over 100,000 views.
The movie that won the title shocked many, but other films also made a big impact on viewers.
At number five with 4 percent of the votes was Barbarian from 2022. It’s about a woman who finds the house she rented is already occupied. Hannah said it’s her favorite horror movie because “it all depends on what scares you personally.” Some viewers didn’t find it scary, but Benedict said it’s clear the film “wants to frighten the audience.”
The fourth spot, with 5 percent, went to the Australian horror Talk to Me. It follows teenagers who summon spirits. Benedict said they both liked the movie, and audiences gave it high praise. It has a 94 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes. One fan wrote, “Best horror since The Conjuring!”
In third place, with 8 percent, was It Follows. The story is about a girl who gets chased by an unstoppable supernatural force after a sexual encounter. With a 95 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes, it’s become a modern classic.
Benedict admitted, “I haven’t seen it, but it’s considered an absolute classic.” Fans especially liked the tension and subtle themes. One said, “You’re always looking behind you, thinking someone walking could be the creature.”
The second-place film, with 9 percent, was Insidious. Although it came out in 2010, more than 15 years ago, it’s still very popular. The movie follows a family whose child is possessed by evil spirits. Benedict called it “a rare mix of silly horror that still manages to truly scare you.”
The clear winner with 44 percent of the votes was Hereditary from 2018. This horror shows a family haunted by terrifying events after their grandmother dies. It holds a 90 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes. People’s reactions are mixed, though, some call it a masterpiece, while others say it’s a confusing letdown.
