HBO has confirmed that the third season of the Game of Thrones prequel is expected to debut in early summer 2026, likely in June.

That timing places the release just beyond the 2026 Emmy Awards eligibility cutoff at the end of May.

The long gap continues the show’s pattern of extended breaks between seasons. Season 1 premiered in 2022, with Season 2 arriving two years later in 2024. Now, Season 3 is following the same trend, stretching the wait to another two years.

HBO’s programming strategy means viewers will also see another Game of Thrones spinoff first. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, which was originally planned for 2025, is now set to arrive in January 2026.

This will mark the first year that two projects from the same fantasy universe premiere within months of each other.

Cast members are already building excitement for what’s to come. Olivia Cooke, who plays Alicent Hightower, shared in a recent interview with Collider that the opening episodes of Season 3 were originally written to close out Season 2.

She described the new season as “even bigger and more ferocious” than what fans have seen so far. Matt Smith and Emma D’Arcy will also return as Daemon and Rhaenyra Targaryen.

If the schedule holds, House of the Dragon Season 3 should land sometime in June or July 2026. HBO has not given an exact date yet, but the timing makes sense given the pattern of past releases.

The wait for House of the Dragon feels long, but it looks like HBO wants to space out its big fantasy shows to keep audiences engaged for years to come.

Having A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms arrive just months before Season 3 is an interesting move, it could either build hype or risk oversaturation. Personally, I think fans will be happy to get two Westeros stories in the same year after such a long gap.
