How ‘Agatha All Along’s’ Nicholas Scratch Could Pave the Way for Dormammu’s Return to the MCU
‘Agatha All Along’ recently debuted its first two episodes, delving into a long-overlooked magical side of the MCU, despite the prominence of powerful magic users in the franchise.
The series is setting the stage for future MCU projects and, surprisingly, may even be linked to a previously defeated villain—Dormammu.
A few weeks ago, we discussed a rumor that Dormammu would make his return to the MCU. At the time, we speculated that his reappearance would come through Clea, introduced in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. However, with the release of Agatha All Along, another character tied to Dormammu has been hinted at: Nicholas Scratch.
While Nicholas hasn’t appeared directly, his name shows up in what looks like an old kids’ room. We suspect he may also be Agatha’s pet rabbit, Señor Scratchy, in disguise.
It’s possible the show will stay close to Nicholas Scratch’s comic origins. He’s Agatha’s son, though their relationship has always been strained. Both hail from New Salem, a hidden town of witches and warlocks where Agatha once led. Nicholas’s name combines elements of folklore, referencing “Old Nick” and “Mr. Scratch,” both names for the Devil.
Nicholas eventually betrays Agatha after she leaves New Salem for a normal life. He leads a group that captures and nearly executes her, but she is saved, and New Salem turns on him. Exiled to the Dark Realm, Nicholas becomes a servant of Dormammu, aiming to become Sorcerer Supreme.
After New Salem’s destruction, Scratch resurfaces in Centerville as “Mayor Nicholas,” where the town is possessed by demons. Patsy Walker, aka Hellcat, returns to find the town under control of a conspiracy involving developers, the Sons of the Serpent, and Salem’s Seven. Avengers and Thunderbolts help free the town, but Patsy stays and uncovers Scratch’s involvement, serving Dormammu, who plans to conquer Hell and make Scratch Sorcerer Supreme. Their plans are ultimately foiled by other Hell-Lords.
All the pieces are there for this storyline to unfold in the MCU—Dormammu’s established, Agatha is present, and the Thunderbolts are on their way next year. While the story may not be adapted exactly, incorporating both Scratch and Dormammu in an upcoming Doctor Strange project seems likely. What do you think? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
