As the main protagonist of a record-breaking anime series, Demon Slayer, Kamado Tanjiro made a name for himself because of his kindness, distinctive appearance, two notable-looking earrings, and his small build but with superhuman strength. But the one that catches the attention of the fans is the big scar on the upper left part of his forehead. Since it was not explained in the first season of the series, many people are wondering how did Tanjiro get his scar?
The reason why Tanjiro attained a scar on his forehead was due to an accident, as he protected one of his siblings from a hot kettle, which eventually poured to his head. But as the series progresses, it appears that there is a deeper meaning behind it.
For those who already read the manga, and caught up to the latest chapter or until the end of the series, the other meaning behind his scar is not a mystery anymore. In this article, I will further explain the meaning behind his noticeable scar on his forehead. In that way, you will realize that the accident behind his scar was a coincidence, rather than the other way around.
Why does Tanjiro have a scar?
For sure even you were asking this question ever since Chapter/Episode 1 of the Demon Slayer series. After all, Tanjiro got introduced in the series with the scar on his forehead already. As the series progressed, Tanjiro was given the chance to explain why he had a scar. He stated that he got it when he shielded his little brother who got knocked down by a brazier. As a result, hot water splashed on the upper left part of his forehead due to the burn caused by the hot kettle. Thus, his signature scar was formed.
As I discuss this article further, you will learn that there is a lot of stuff going on behind this scar. This gave some fans the relief of getting their theories confirmed because this scar of Tanjiro is not just an accidental wound that he got at a certain timeline before the start of the series.
How Did Tanjiro Get His Scar?
As mentioned above, Tanjiro got his scar when he saved his little brother from a falling brazier. But it is not the only reason why Tanjiro got his scar. In the Final Selection where Tanjiro and many examiners joined to officially become a demon slayer. Tanjiro’s scar got worse when he faced the Hand Demon. While fighting with the Hand Demon, Tanjiro got hit by the Hand Demon and he got his face slammed into a tree and it badly wounded his scar even more.
Because of that incident, his scar bled and by the looks of it, his scar became bigger and darker than usual as the blood drips on his damaged scar and after the Final selection scene when Tanjiro is recovering to his master’s house, he has a bandage on his scar it only indicates that it was damaged to his fight with the hand demon. When he set on a journey a few days later after the incident, he removed the bandage on his forehead leaving a bigger and darker scar than the normal burn scar that we see in the first episode.
Where Did Tanjiro’s Scar Come From?
Saving his little brother and fighting the hand demon is just one of the simple reasons where Tanjiro’s scar came from. But I would like to make the readers aware that there are major spoilers behind the next details that I will discuss, as it also talks about a very vital part of the story. For sure most of you are already wondering if the scar had a very special meaning for Tanjiro, and it is not just a result of some coincidence.
Though the first parts of the series revealed that the scar came from an accident, as the series progressed, it appears that the scar is a symbol of Tanjiro’s destiny as a Demon Slayer. If you already saw the Hashira, you will notice that some of them also bear scars with them. It’s because the scar is also a Demon Slayer Mark, proof of being a very powerful Demon Slayer destined to end the Demon race once and for all. Due to the accident, Tanjiro always thought that the scar was just a burn mark.
However, Tanjiro was not aware of the scar’s overall capability, as well as the power hidden in it. After all, it is a complete coincidence for the Demon Slayer Mark to appear at the same spot where the hot water splashed on him when he shielded his little brother from it. Interestingly, the Demon Slayer Mark that he attained and the accident which caused the scar made Tanjiro stronger in two different ways. The accident made him more protective and determined for his goals as the older brother of the family while realizing the Mark itself made him stronger as an actual Demon Slayer, and eventually became determined to join the Hashira.
What’s also special about Tanjiro’s scar is not his dormant power as a part of the Demon Slayer Corps. It is also a special mark that only exists for people who can use the Sun Breathing Technique, the most powerful type of Breathing technique used by Demon Slayers. Also, this scar changes and changes three times throughout the series.
This shows that the scar is not just some burn that he got, but is a special symbol that displays a Demon Slayer’s power level as it evolved further through training, and of course, determination to become a powerful Demon Slayer. Thus, you can say that there are three reasons why he got the scar in the first place.
When Did Tanjiro Get His Scar?
A definite part of the Demon Slayer timeline was not given in terms of the events about how Tanjiro got his signature scar, the scene where he got his scar from saving his little brother. The scene where he got the scar due to the accident was not even shown yet in the anime series, because Season 2 is still being planned to be produced and released on television.
But what I would like to discuss this time is how he attained the scar as the Demon Slayer Mark and as a symbol of being a Sun Breathing Technique user. The Demon Slayer Mark that he attained is very special because he also learned how to use the Sun Breathing technique when he was young, courtesy of his father Tanjuro. He taught the technique as a means to pass over the powerful Breathing Technique since he is a member of the Kamado family.
Tanjiro did not realize this, even the fact that he actually learned such a powerful move long ago before the start of the series. It’s because his father never told him that the technique is actually a series of techniques meant to combat demons. What Tanjiro was aware of is that it was just a simple kind of dance that his father taught him. He would realize that he actually learned the Sun Breathing Technique at the Infinity Castle Arc, which is somewhere around the final parts of the Demon Slayer series.
But what amazed me is that the scenarios when he got the scar, and the scenes on where he realized how it was formed, actually became a source of Tanjiro’s character development. First, he became more protective and loving to his family as an older brother when he got accidentally burnt by the hot water. Second, it gave him the resolve of becoming a powerful Demon Slayer when he realized that it is a mark. And lastly, it made him more determined to master Sun Breathing when he understood that it is a symbol of being a user of the most powerful demon-slaying technique in existence.
Why Does Tanjiro’s Scar Change?
Throughout the anime series, we notice Tanjiro’s Scar gradually becoming bigger and bigger as the series runs. The reason why Tanjiro’s light-colored and small ordinary scar became darker and bigger is because of the incident in the Final selection when he got hit by the Hand Demon and slams his face into the tree because of the impact.
The scene where Tanjiro attained his scar was not yet revealed in the anime because Season 2 is still in the works. But the scene where his light-colored scar became darker already happened.
After his face slams into the tree Tanjiro’s forehead blood drips from his scar and it got much worse. But just like what I have said earlier it is confirmed that it is not a simple scar but a Demon Slayer Mark instead.
What Is A Demon Slayer Mark?
Now that you’re aware of the fact that Tanjiro’s scar is a Demon Slayer Mark, I will also discuss further what this is, as well as what it can do as a Demon Slayer. The Demon slayer Mark is a source of incredible power that if someone has a Demon Slayer Mark. A Demon Slayer who has this mark is now capable of fighting on par with some of the strongest demons in existence.
It also gives the demon slayer who possesses the Demon Slayer Mark the ability to see how a human or demon’s body functions. What’s special about this is that it gives them the ability to see how the blood flows in their target’s body. This grants them a defensive advantage in battle as it helps them figure out the next movement of their enemy once they start attacking them. gives the person who possesses it an ability to see how the body works and how the blood flows so they can see the next move of the enemy.
Most importantly, it gives the Demon Slayer with a Demon Slayer Mark a huge advantage when using their weapon, the Nichirin. This makes their swords shine with a crimson red glow, which actually slows down a demon’s extraordinary regeneration ability because of the extreme heat of the sword. However, using this powerful ability is not easy because even the Hashira did not know how to use it until they accidentally did that without them knowing what completely happened when they’re fighting a very formidable demon.
However, one member of the Hashira understands how they end up having a Demon Slayer Mark According to one of the Hashira ( Muichiro Tokito) it is not easy to unlock that ability because it requires the person to have a life and death situation and relation to the one with the original scar which is Tanjiro.
One of the conditions to unlock the Demon Slayer Mark is for someone to have a heart rate of 200bpm and a 30° temperature to unlock the Demon slayer mark. As Tanjiro faces formidable opponents in the anime series, he’s becoming stronger. As a result, his scar or the Demon Slayer Mark is changing and growing as he becomes more powerful.
The Demon Slayer Mark is pretty much like a recurring theme in the shonen manga genre, just like Naruto’s Kyuubi seal or Ichigo’s Zanpakuto which is also sealed. The Demon Slayer Mark appears to be sealed as well and transforms much like Naruto and Ichigo’s sealed abilities, which grow through sheer training and determination.
In terms of concluding this article, you can say that Tanjiro’s scar is caused by different reasons that all coincidentally occurred altogether at the same time when he was young, and before the start of the series. But what’s remarkable about this is that his scar also gave him two amazing character developments that made Tanjiro the kindhearted, yet the strong man that we all love as we watched him progress further until the end of the series.
